Guys doing dance for sports?

The school that I am heading to next year offers Dance as an interscholastic sport, but I've been pretty skeptical about doing it since:
a) 99% of the team was made of girls based on their website pic.
b) I wasn't even sure at the time if I would get into the school, so I decided to worry about it later.
Now that I did get accepted, the idea's been haunting me.

Don't get me wrong, I love me some girlfriends, but having some male companions in the group would be really nice.
Plus, doing an unpopular sport doesn't necessarily seem like it will be the best thing for my transition into a new school.
Did anyone experience a situation similar to this? I would really appreciate your opinions on the matter.

Good question - and I don’t have the answer! But it seems like something you should definitely be able to find out more about at revisit day. You might also want to contact the team coach and ask him/her how you’d fit in as a guy on the dance team.

I don’t know about at American prep schools, but here at my school, the guys on the dance team are all well-liked and popular. Provided, they’re all pretty cute, but they’re the only 3 guys on a team of 10 dancers. And they’re all swimmers too - so maybe just do some other sports to show your supreme athleticness? :)

I’m a competitive cheerleader, and guys on my gym’s coed squads are definitely the minority. The senior (14~18 yo) dance team has just one guy. Obviously, they get more than their share of eye candy (we are cheerleaders, after all  ), but depending on the choreography, you will probably have to take on some strength-based roles…think pas de deux.

Step out of your box, and try something new! Good luck

I’m a girl dancer and I’m going to school this fall so I don’t have any first Han experience but from talking to the dance instructors they say they do have some guys in the program. Especially the beginning level. Dance is a very good conditioner for most sports so it can’t hurt

Thanks everyone for your replies! I guess I’ll try contacting their dance coach later on. Can’t wait for the revisit day! :D
