actually, GMU has been rejecting higher-end students with those creds recently. while you're probably thinking "you're insane, they're a shoe-in", honestly how many 3.8s are going to go to GMU? that's why you write essays...if they see passion or a reason to want to attend GMU, fine...but if its a plain ole, "heres my essay" type, then GMU will see that a 3.8 is obviously applying to GMU as a safety, and will assume that they're applying elsewhere that are safeties that are a little more in their range (a 3.8 safety is more U-Md, VT, JMU, smaller UCs, ect) and not accept them. you're next question will probably "why on earth not?" well, its simple. GMU can only hand out so many acceptances...if they hand them out to the 2.2s-2.8s that GMU really is a good academic match, those accepties are more likely to attend, all while keeping GMU's admittance percentage low(er). instead, they'll waitlist the 3.8s, or even reject them, and hope that if they REALLY want to come to GMU, they'll simply appeal. this way, they'll have those spots that might have been taken by the 3.8s, and be able to give them to those who really do have a high chance of attending. slowly over the years, schools will be able to increase their average admitting GPAs, which GMU has been doing.
it does sound dumb, but i've heard from numerous reps from schools like GMU, Radford, ect that are so-called "safety schools", and its true that for admitting a 3.8 is a bad move, because not only is there now more room for those who these safeties ARE a reach, but schools can keep their admission percentages down. win-win for everyone.

i thought you were from maryland at first from all of the dc metro-area schools! just so you know, good choice sticking mostly to dc; it basically is amazing here. i agree mostly with the original assessment...but i think you are definitely in at GW ED. i don't even really see GW as being a better/more selective school than american, quite frankly, so i don't know why that would be considered a safety while ED GW would be almost a reach. would say GW and american are both matches. (fyi avg. sat and act scores of incoming freshman at american are higher than those at gw...)

your sat math score is on the low end for all of your schools, however. you should retake in dec. to try to get it up into the 600s.

which school are you applying to at gtown? gtown doesn't look at the writing score, which will hurt you. you also need three SAT IIs and an interview to apply. You are in the top quartile of students at your school, and while this isn't bad, it's not great for gtown. I think that you can get into GW ED.

I'm applying for SFS at GTown.
I retook the SAT II and am getting the scores back Tuesday. I'm sure I got at least 600 in math, if not 650-700 ish.
I already had an interview and my 3 SAT IIs are all done (though retaking one of them next Sat).
They don't look at writting? Grrrr
