GWU vs NYU. Prestige?

this is a reeeeeaaaaaalllly tough call. Help me out!

Also, which is generally considered more prestigious? It doesn't make a difference to me but it makes a huge difference to my super Indian dad

What’s your major? Overall, I would say NYU is more prestigious though.

Undecided at Columbian

If you’re undecided then probably NYU, but if you’re considering politics or international relations or something along those lines then GW for sure.

nyu is more prestigious but FA at gwu is alot better …

actually FA at any college is better than nyu

Yeah strongly considering politics. Nyu is my first choice but it’s unbelievably expensive. GWU is my number 2, followed by many others

Overall, NYU outranks GWU in college rankings.

I’ve known people who have transferred to NYU from GWU, and vice versa. It seems like a lot of people in DC want to move to NYC, and vice versa, as well (clearly “a lot” is perception, but it’s a trend among my classmates).

If you look at individual programs, rankings vary (i.e., IAFF at GW is nearly the best).

I would look at the alumni networks and debate your situation. If you want into politics, DC/GWU. If you want into entertainment or so on, NYC/NYU.

Also consider the scholarships you receive at either.

IMHO, NYU is overrated. To me, proof is in their marketing. NYU sent numerous brochures promoting itself while GWU sent nothing but an acceptance letter. That was a signal to me that GWU doesn’t need to promote itself but would rather keep the money for its primary mission of education. Maybe that is why they can afford to be more generous with their grants? For what its worth, to me, that was way more impressive than the NYU glitz. Having said that, the location is something to consider. For example, if you get into Stern and want to study Finance then NYU is the hands down choice. But for just about anything else, I would pick a school that gives you the most grant money.

Also, NYU’s Financial Aid is terrible! My “S” was offered 25K/yr at GW! Zippo at NYU! I heard this from several parents about NYU.

CJ

I got 60k from nyu but half is in loans so I would be in about $120,000 in debt by graduation. GW was extremely generous in terms of scholarships and grants tho…so GW definitely wins in terms of aid

yikes, $120,000 in debt isn’t worth it. i have a substantial amount of debt from undergrad (nowhere near 120k though) and am kicking myself now. it makes every life decision i make a little more difficult…think about it, it’s like carrying around a mini-mortgage with you without the benefit of having a place to live. not to mention if you needed to make a big purchase such as a car it would be very difficult to get it financed with all the debt. if you could see yourself happy at either school i would go for gw, save the money, and use the savings to go to a great grad school or to set yourself up nicely once you graduate. nyu may be the higher-ranked, but i doubt you will get a better education there than you would at gw. it’s not like it’s the difference between yale and southeastern state u., right? anyway, didn’t know if you wanted a logical opinion, but thought someone should tell you to think about all that debt…
