I understand many students who do not get into Haas tend to fall back on Economics, however I have a much larger interest in the new ORMS major and was thinking of double majoring if I get into Haas. To apply to ORMS I would have to complete Econ 1, 2, or 3 and UGBA 10 (both crossed with Haas) and Math 53/54. For me, getting into Haas is first and foremost, so Im afraid by taking 53 and 54 I might slaughter my GPA and put Haas at risk. Any suggestions as to what I should do?

Its a shame its capped at 25 students, basically everything Im interested in is capped...blehhh

what do you like about the ORMS major? I'm interested in it, aswell.

Im a junior transfer and got admitted for Economics but I just found out about ORMS. I'm intersted in decision making modeling in economic systems.

ORMS is a branch of IEOR, but L&S major and not as technical. There are about 100 IEOR undergrads and the classes are fairly small. Whereas ORMS requires 5 upper division courses, IEOR requires at least 13.

Unfortunately there is no option of major change for junior transfers, but you are free to take IEOR courses as electives.

Using ORMS as fallback may not be a good option for a Haas intended students because you have to go through math 53/54 and stats 134 which may or may not be difficult depending on the professor.

Because junior transfers are admitted based on the major you chose on your application, you cannot change. I know this is true for College of Engineering, maybe Letters and Science is different (unlikely though)?

i read that under the IEOR major on assist.org and they say the same thing for "capped" majors like Economics (i.e. you cannot switch into the major as a transfer once you're at Berkeley).

However, nothing of the sort was stated on the ORMS assist.org page. Anyways, I just called the dept. and asked. So I'll know for sure, soon enough.

If anyone's curious, I'll post the dept.'s response here.
