all classes taken at ccc
GPA: 3.3
EC: Track and Feild; cross country; summer-long business internship with a company; many charity events volunteered at; I have work experience; I have my own internet business; A letter of recommendation from a UCB alumni; a few letters of rec from teachers

I also have examples of a few hardships I've overcome

Prereqs: will completed after spring(2012) before transfer in fall(2012)

the community college im going to right now does not offer athletics but my track times are competitive with UCB athletes. would this help at all?

The Minimum GPA is 3.0 and I am constantly told by UCB that extra curriculars have a strong effect on the chances of getting in and I hear of many transfers 3.2-3.5 getting in because of their e.c.s so I’m wondering how mine stack up.

Haas is pretty competitive; even more so than Berkeley itself which is already ridiculously competitive. I assume you’re not a native English-speaker which could work to your advantage. If not, then work on your spelling and grammar.

To answer your question, no I don’t think that you will be accepted to Haas. If all you want to major in is business though, then you may as well apply but please apply elsewhere as well.

if you have every breadth/prereq done, I’d give you a 50-60% chance as a spring admit. I would not expect you to get in for fall due to how low your gpa is. spring is definitely in the realm of possibility.

@Lipper I know its competitive. Have any tips for me on anymore ec stuff? Or anything I can do to make up for my low GPA?

@BPkid101Thanks thats higher than what I was thinking. Berkeley Doesnt do spring admits, only fall. Do you think fall 2012 is not an option for me?

@peterr86 I know there have been others with similarly low GPAs as mine accepted into the HAAS program. Yeah I’m hoping for UCB but I know I’ll have to apply to other schools. I thought about waiting it out another year and heightening my GPA but I’m not sure if I can take another year working on General ed. Just seems like a waste of time.

@sppedlightnin: The odds are stacked wayyyyy against you. A 3.3, the for most part, won’t get you into Berkeley. A 3.3 for Haas makes it virtually guaranteed that you won’t get in. Are there exceptions? Of course, there always are, but you have to play the odds. Haas (at least last year when my friend got in) accepted something like 15% of its applicants. That 15% represents the cream of the crop. Not only are you applying for the top UC school, but for the most competitive undergrad program at that school, and you’re doing it with a GPA that wouldn’t have gotten you into UCSD this year without TAG.

I try and be bluntly honest with people when they ask this question. By all means, apply, but your ECs aren’t unique and your GPA isn’t competitive.

@Grimes99 I completely understand and I appreciate all the feedback. Is there anything I can do to set me apart? any suggestions on ECs? I understand my GPA is not at all competitive and its actually hurting more than helping.

@speedlightnin: I would emphasize whatever hardships you’ve overcome, collect any additional letters of rec you can from professors and - most importantly - work you ass off on getting that GPA up.

As a Haas admit this year, I can assure you my friends with amazing ECs did not get in. Both had 3.7s. 3.3 = no chance.

There are no exceptions. Just look at the haas website for god sakes. The average gpa range of admits is between 3.6 - 4.0. Probably very few get in with a 3.6 or 3.7.

By the way, the letters of rec advise is garbage. Berkeley doesn’t look at letters of recommendation for undergrad. I have asked several times.

OP, your athletic skills is pretty pointless because you don’t compete at your community college. You really have no chance of getting into Haas. I think you should aim for business/econ at midtier UCs.

How can you say that there are no exceptions? An average is simply an average; I’m sure you’ve heard of outliers.

And as far as your friends go: they may have had amazing ECs, but there may always be someone with more amazing ones! Not to say (at all) that OP’s ECs are amazing, but you never know what kind of insanely harrowing hardships he or anyone else has faced.

Lmao get over yourself, Investment. You sound like an arrogant d0uche that has nothing else better to do than putting others down on CC and feeling good about yourself.

The gpa range of admitted students is 3.6 - 4.0. Sorry, didn’t mean average. The range itself is from 3.6 to 4.0. Haas along with many other schools have an unwritten rule to not admit students with lower gpas for a reason (they don’t want their gpa stats to be lowered).

Hey, just telling the truth. Why would you want me to lie to the op and tell him a 3.3 will make it in?

He came here asking for an opinion about whether or not he’ll get in. A Haas admit told him there’s no way in hell that’s happening. There’s no point in babying the responses on CC. I’d want someone to be as honest with me as possible.

There are always extreme exceptions (Berkeley always has some 2.4 admits every year it seems) but like FoggyFuture said, unless you’ve cured AIDS with that 3.3 or your dad happens to be a congressman on the education committee, it’s not gonna happen.
