Haas transfers!

Hey prospective Haas students!

I'm a transfer student from fall 2013 that got accepted last year for Haas. If you guys have any questions about the transfer process, stats, etc. Feel private message me or ask on the thread.

Would you mind posting your classes/grades and extracurriculars while you were at CC? What classes are you taking this semester and how would you describe the level of competition, especially given the grade deflation?

If I get in I’d like to add Econ as a second major. Do you think that I’m being overly ambitious or does double majoring seem doable?

what classes are you taking this semester and how would you describe the level of competition, especially given the grade deflation?

A) I’m taking the core classes; honestly grade deflation is evident especially in Haas, but don’t let it intimidate you. I’ve gotten A’s in my past 3 midterms, and only one B+ ( in a speech course, the grading is more subjective and for every A you must have a C in the course, which makes an A extremely difficult in these courses). Obviously some transfer students are doing better than others, but grades aren’t going to make or break you within Haas, you’ll get your internships through hard-work and networking.

If I get in I’d like to add Econ as a second major. Do you think that I’m being overly ambitious or does double majoring seem doable?

A) I was previously looking into double majoring in Econ or minoring in computer science, but as I actually step foot onto the campus, I decided not to. One of the main considerations you should look into is: What are you looking for in your college experience? For me, I wanted to get as involved as possible on campus, get internships, and get a “good” GPA. Doing two majors at once you’ll have to supplement social life, campus engagement, etc. I love Economics, so I decided to take more UGBA courses that are economics related ( rather than actually double majoring in it).

Some myths: having a double major or juggling a bunch of units at once isn’t going to impress your employer, they want to see your achievements and the reason why you decided to do participate in certain events/communities. Sure, double majoring is admirable, but is it worth it? Do you want to take 16-18 units a semester and risk your GPA just for the sake of getting two degrees? It depends what’s important to you ultimately and it varies from person to person.

It is doable, but look at the opportunity cost.

I’m applying to Haas this month. Could I get your opinion on my my personal statements?

Send it to me through private message

For me it isn’t so much having the second degree or impressing employers as it is just wanting to learn. I crave knowledge. Business Administration is a vocational major, and I obviously want to learn the skills that Haas students do, but I also very much enjoy the theoretical side of business reflected in economics. I suppose that this is something I’ll worry about later if I’m lucky enough to be in a position to make that decision, though.

I also have a few more questions (sorry!). Did you apply to other UCs, and if yes, how did you configure your first essay to address both Haas and (I’m assuming) Econ at other schools? What was on the Haas supplement [prompt(s), etc], and what is the format of the Haas r

^ Business and Economics are fundamentally different and for different types of students.
Econ is the theoretical stuff (which is why I personally hate it), as a business major you are looking toward getting your butt into the real world and starting a professional career. You don’t crave knowledge for knowledge (that’s econ), your desire of knowledge only extends to what you can use. Therefore besides the besides major, it’d be wise to focus on stuff outside of the classroom. So for someone passionate about being a business major it makes no sense to put effort into a degree that isn’t usable. Like the OP said, no one is going to hire you because you have both an Eon and Biz degree

I started a non-profit with a friend because I wanted business experience. I like the college classes I’m taking because I like learning. Must an enjoyment of gaining practical business skills and learning economic theory be mutually exclusive? I said that my reason for considering Econ as a second major isn’t enhanced employability. It’s purely personal. And Economics is supposedly the most common second major for Haas students pursuing two degrees.

There are additional essays for HAAS? What the hell? Where are they/how do i get them? The only essay prompts I’ve seen are these:

What is your intended major? Discuss how your interest in the subject developed and describe any experience you have had in the field — such as volunteer work, internships and employment, participation in student organizations and activities — and what you have gained from your involvement.

Tell us about a personal quality, talent, accomplishment, contribution or experience that is important to you. What about this quality or accomplishment makes you proud, and how does it relate to the person you are?

The Haas supplement comes in January when we update our applications with our fall semester grades.

Thanks man

@Gunnnn, Pretty much. As an Econ major you should be aware of the opportunity cost. For a Haas student to pursue Econ, that same energy would be better spent outside the classroom. Furthermore as transfers we only have 2 years + 1 semester to complete both majors. If we started UCB as freshman (especially freshman with AP credits knocking out the GEs) it would have a lot easier to pursue econ. Not to mention i’d be our backup incase we didn’t make it into haas. (which is prob why a lot of Haas people do econ as well)

But for us transfer it doesn’t make any sense starting it from scratch jr year. Especially with that whole issue of grade deflation, it makes better (business) sense to take upper division classes in a non-competitive major.

I mean if you wanna do both, no one is gonna stop you… but I’d also wager you won’t make a good businessman if you make poor decision like that in life which kinda begs the question of why you are even pursing a business degree.

Thanks for the advice, although as an intended business major in an increasingly relationship-dependent world, you could use some work at coming off less condescending, especially to someone to whose skills, career plans, and college desires you are completely ignorant.

@Gunnnnn

Did you apply to other UCs, and if yes, how did you configure your first essay to address both Haas and (I’m assuming) Econ at other schools?

Yes I applied to multiple UC’s and USC. For my essay I showed my interest starting with economics and transitioning it into an interest with business administration. So you could say I applied to two majors on my applications. (UCSD is the only one I applied for that was strictly ECON; however, they don’t read personal statements anyways) , UCI/UCLA I applied for business, bizecon respectively so that wasn’t a problem.

What was on the Haas supplement [prompt(s), etc], and what is the format of the Haas r

Hey Eviity,

I’m not able to private message on this forum yet, do you mind messaging me your contact email?

I am working on my personal statement and need some advice.

Thanks!

Do Haas care if you did not complete the breadth requirement because I am a CC transfer and I finished my breadth except one course which was not offered at my school?

@werz2013

You cannot miss one pre-requisite,

but missing a breadth requirement is okay (they removed this requirement last year).

Goodluck

@Eviity
How hard was it for you regarding courses such as Calc and Macro&Micro Economics? I know Calc will be the death of me but I’m willing to put my best effort in it. Honestly, how many hours did you study a day to maintain a 4.0 GPA while working at the same time? My plan right now is either attend a local CSU (SSU) and major in Business Administration or challenge myself and my future and attend CC for two years and hopefully transfer to Haas or Marshalls.

hey @Minwhalee if you want to attend a good undergrad biz school i would transfer out. haas is a tricky program to get into, but usc marshall is way easier. try your best to maintain a 4.0 and write killer essays, cuz for haas essays are a major game changer. my advice is to again maintain a great GPA (3.7+) and apply to both. also for the macro/micro econ and calc classes just try your hardest, the material isnt too bad and if your having a lot of trouble try to go to office hours or tutoring! good luck!!

Is it okay to list some of the same things from our UC app to the Haas supplement?
