Hair straightening

How often can you straighten your hair with a flat iron without doing TOO much damage? And how do you prevent excessive damage? I wish my hair was straight to begin with ugh...

My bio teacher told me that the straight hair gene is a recessive gene so it's really rare to be born with dead straight hair.

.. lol ok im finished with my nerdiness... buy those hair protective creams - My sister has one for protection against heat: blowdrying and straightening. Also, her shampoo and conditioner includes the heat protective ingredients or whatever. And trust me, they really really work well. Whenever she used to straighten her hair before those protective cream stuffs, she used to have kinda - frizzy hair, like 2hrs after straightening. Now those stuffs even hold the straightness and keep her hair soft and healthy.

Or you could just try my method and get those straightening perms. I think they're supposed to be healtheir for the hair: no more heat damage for the next 0.5-1year.. It's just the 4.5hrs of salon time that really gets me. Oh and the do-not-wash-your-hair-for-the-next-3-days thing really ****es me off lol

I really recommend a straight perm. I recently got one done after straightening my hair for a few years (my hair isn't curly, it's mostly straight with waves here and there) and now it's straight and I don't have to straighten it everyday.

It definitely depends on the straightener too. I know chi straighteners or something haha work really well. Basically the ceramic ones.

But I also recommend a straight perm too which is something I might get done during the summer. I know...I hate the not-washing-for-three-days thing too. It's so irritating, not to mention gross.

Thanks! The only problem with straight perms is the cost-- SO expensive :(.

my sister straightens her hair everyday with a ceramic iron, and it comes out great.

as for me, i have fully embraced my frizzy curly hair and wear my jewfro with pride :)

I have wavy/curly-ish hair that I straighten twice a week when school is in session. Once a week, I wear a ponytail. Another day, I use curling stuff and have curled hair. Another, I brush it out and do the Marilyn-Monroe-y thing. Weekends I leave it as is, and summer it's either up, curly, or brushed out. By limiting straight days, I keep it healthy. I also NEVER blow-dry it.

I got one of those Japanese straightening processes done. It was more than $2,000. I was really lucky, though. I have connections ;) so I got it done for free because I volunteered for a really famous hair stylist down on South Beach, so he did it for me. It took only three hours, but with the 4 hottest gay guys all working on my hair at the same time, lol.

The whole not-washing-my-hair-for-three-days thing was hell, but it was definitely worth it. Before, it would take me at least 4 hours to iron & blow dry my hair (and it was really painful, too!), but now I can say it takes me an hour. Thirty minutes for my hair to dry, and thirty minutes to blow dry/iron it. My hair is ten times healthier now, too. The only bad thing is that I have to go back every 6 months, pay $300, and redo my roots. But, I repeat, it's really worth it, and now my hair is not damaged that much by heat.

It's not PERFECTLY straight, but it's a HUGE improvement from my big ball of frizz. My hair's now wavy, and I like it a lot more, so every once in a while, I leave it like that because it looks REALLY nice. Plus, I'm not up for the hassle of straightening it every single day.

Straight Hair = mad hot

^^ haha, I agree

As long as you don't straighten it single day you should be fine. But if you blowdry it then straighten it...thats a double killer for your hair. I let my curly hair air dry then I straighten it. But since it's summer I don't really care what my hair looks because I'm just upnorth usually. As long as you give your hair a break every once and awhile.

dont straight perm it--it doesnt look as good as ceramic irons (hot plates) and it changes the texture of the hair

dont blow dry every day
dont wash your hair every day (do wash every other day!)
dont straighten every day even, sometimes wavy is cute

^^^I agree with her

Except I think no one should ever blow dry

blow drying is pretty damaging; ironing with a ceramic iron is so much healthier. That's why I barely blow dry. I only do it when my mom makes me, lol.

I have really good stuff that you put in your hair before blowdrying or straightening, it's called "Redken smooth down heat glide" it's in a clear dark brown-redish bottle. It's $20 at drugstores, which sounds like a lot but 1/2 a bottle has lasted me a year already. Also, try leave-in conditioner after you wash your hair it keeps it from getting dried out.

You can change the texture of your hair by getting the right cut..

Anyway, $2000?!?!?!?!? Holy crap!! I got mine done for 150$ lol. I have to go every 8 months for about the same price. But my god! 2000$ for straightening hair? It must be some good stuff.

I also, NEVER blowdry. The last time I blowdried my hair was like 2 years ago. I 'pat dry'..

Don't wash your hair every day, smooth a tiny bit of something like olive or coconut oil onto your ends after every wash. Not like a LOT of oil, otherwise you'll get greasy ends, but just a drop.

$2000 is a whole lot, lol. That's why I was REALLY lucky that I got it done for free. It's supposed to cost less, but I have A LOT of hair..and it's really long, too. It's supposed to cost less than $1000..so you can imagine how much hair I have, lol. The cost mostly just pays for labor, not the actual product, though.

if you have incredibly curly-ish hair, do nottt perm it so it only lasts for 6 months. my friend did that and it lasted for a good month, but she would still have to striaghten her hair all the time to keep it from frizzing and all

there's the maxiglide hair straightener. i haven't used it but it has some positive reviews from customers and i was thinking about buying it.
