Harder To Get a Scholarship As A Transfer?

My friend just let me in on this, I had no idea. I'm freaking out now. I currently go to SUNY Stony Brook University. I got a 1910 on the SATs but only a decent GPA in high school (around a 3.3-3.4). If I do very well in Stony Brook for a semester or a year( whichever is better), is there really less of a chance that I can get a scholarship to a private school such as Fordham? I really don't have the money to pay for a school like that.

Please, help. I'm really not happy here and I want to get out, but I'm horribly afraid I'm too late

Merit and need based scholarships are much harder to come by for transfers. (There is a recent thread here about transfer merit scholarships). A lot of the transfer scholarships are for community college students ([Phi Theta Kappa - Scholarship Listing](http://www.ptk.org/schol/newscholdir/list.php)). Have you considered transferring to another SUNY or even CUNY school?

I have, but would much rather not. Would it be better if I transferred to a community college next semester and did three semesters there before applying private?

If you can muster top grades and have demonstrated need, there are privates that meet 100% of need for transfers. They are mostly top schools. Merit aid is much harder to get.

So my chances for getting any scholarship to say, Fordham or Providence are low? Are my chances of getting accepted lowered as well?

According to the college board Fordham and Providence only meet an average of 75% and 76% of need, respectively. I think as a transfer, your “chances” of full need met are slim at these schools.

Don’t forget, that at all but a very small number of schools, colleges that “meet 100% of need” will include loans in their FA package.

Fr and transfer acceptance stats can be found on the CB website.

“is there really less of a chance that I can get a scholarship to a private school such as Fordham?” - Short Answer = Yes

That’s a real shame.

Thanks a lot for the responses, everyone
