Harvard RD Class of 2020 Applicant Thread

@T26E4 Thanks for your answer. But it’s not like it’s rude or anything to ask that question, right…??

@T26E4 because unfortunately, I already sent that message…:’( and I just hope that I didn’t seem like an impatient, or a nosy applicant stepping into the line of authority just by asking that kind of thing. I put my words in a polite, careful way, though. These e-mails don’t even get to any admissions officers, right? I’m a bit worried so…

It’s a non issue. I wouldn’t worry about it. I’m sure many people inquire of admissions – they simply don’t have the info to tell you.

@T26E4 Okay. Cool. Thank you so much!:slight_smile:

@schroscat until I receive a thin letter in the mail lol

@aBitOfLuck Hey, hey, hey, you never know!

Got that 2.7 percent chance of getting in all applicants being equal…

@schroscat @TheWaffleMan149 I suppose we all do; good luck again, everyone!

Do you guys think that Harvard is worth attending for a prospective engineering major? I know that the SEAS is becoming better and better every year, but would anybody give up MIT for Harvard Engineering?

Certainly people attend some of the Ivies that traditionally aren’t the cutting edge reputations in engineering and manage perfectly fine. I’ve seen that they want the breadth of experience in course options and classmates and community. If CalTech/MIT are on one end of the spectrum, I’d say Cornell/Penn is in the middle and Yale/Dartmouth at the other end. All can produce great engineers. It’s what you want.

Thanks!

Hi. Any tips for Skype interview? and the kind of questions they usually ask?

@Hypocrit They ask “Why Harvard?”, “Describe your extracurriculars,” “What are your academic interests?”, etc.

@aBitOfLuck
Thank you

They ask the same questions they’d ask if you were in a cafe. Advice for you: try to be in a room w/o surrounding noise (kid brother’s music, barking dog, traffic/sirens outside the window). Make sure there’s enough LIGHT on you. See what your camera view looks like. If you’re using a laptop, tablet or smartphone, make sure you have enough charge! I had a student whose smart phone died on her in the middle of our Facetime interview. She and I had to reconnect through Skype halfway through!

@Hypocrit I had a Skype interview too.
PM me if you have any questions.

whoever said 760 in math level II is low is an idiot.

@rahuilmars231 I’d say it’s not low for an applicant whose intended major is in a field not related to math, but for someone who indicates he/she wants to major in a math-related field that’s quite low, considering how many 800’s in math lvl II people submit, and that 760 is only in the 68 percentile.

@aposnova I don’t think an applicant with an 800 would be preferred over another one with a 760, owing to just the 40 point difference. I dont think its that low because its a difference of 1-2 questions. Besides, SAT subjects constitute hardly 5% of the entire decision making process.

@rahuilmars231 as far as I’m concerned, for Math II the curve isn’t as harsh, and thus a 40-point difference is more like a difference of 5-6 questions, which is more or less substantial for the test with just 50 questions. I do agree, though, that the subject tests probably don’t have much weight in the decision-making process; however, I think that if two people indicated that they wanted to major in math-related fields, considering they’re almost equal by all other aspects, the one with an 800 will be preferred over another one. Of course, we can’t know for sure, though.
