Harvard Summer School 2006

LOL, so is anyone else applying besides me??? I will most probably end up here this summer unless I somehow miraculously get into either RSI or TASP. I know it's quite expensive but I can't think of a better way of proving your ability to handle a colege courseload than by getting a good grade in a Harvard class. WOOT I dub thee the official thread!!!

Here's the website:
<a href="http://www.ssp.harvard.edu/%5B/url%5D">http://www.ssp.harvard.edu/</a></p>

Yeah, I am. I know I'm not going to make it into TASP, and Boston's kind of close by, so I can commute to my classes (if I get into the program, but it doesn't sound -that- selective). I had a question concerning the application, though, and I made a thread about it.

<a href="http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showthread.php?t=132477%5B/url%5D">http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showthread.php?t=132477</a></p>

It's way too expensive. 10K for a class? I really don't think so.

If I attend, I would plan on doing the Short Session 1 a.k.a the 4-week session so it works out cheaper. It only costs 4 grand then I think so it wouldn't be that much of a burden financially. Don't let money stand in the way of education!!!! Besides, I know some of you CC'ers attend expensive private schools that cost upwards of 40 grand per year so this opportunity is much more worthwile, financially and educationally, comparatively speaking of course.

Besides it's Harvard jeez... you get to eat in a dining hall that looks like it came out of an old British castle lol.:)

I have nothing against harvard but the program really is quite expensive. there are so many other programs out there that are much more selective than harvard SSP and definitely dont cost as much. dont get me wrong, im sure you will have an awesome time there, one of my friends did but do look into other programs to keep your options open.

I've looked into it, but the glaring price has kept me from seriously considering it. And like naansian said, there are more competitive programs that cost less.

And I go to a suburban public school that's not all that well funded.

Nope, it's either TASP or a political internship for me.

I'm thinking about it but the cost is phenomenal would you say? but there are other programs costing less i agree.

How selective is that summer program?

I really want to go! Btw, there's another thread about this on the Harvard board - you can check that one out...

Pshhhhhh Yale Summer School > Harvard Summer School

It's so ridiculously priced. How can anyone afford this? Besides millionnaires and such.

ALL of these college summer programs are insanely expensive. And I really, really wanted to go to one.

It is insanely expensive, and not that selective... I wish they didn't make me pay for board though, because Boston has tons of great food that's less expensive. I ended up eating at the Annenburg a few times, and spent about the same amount of money on the board fee as going out to restaurants.
Yale's more expensive than Harvard, but they're around the same ballpark.
It was tons of fun when I went (Summer of 2004) though.. Got to go to the DNC, which was my highlight.. you can visit colleges and get an interview on campus.. I would recommend it to anyone who has nothing else too interesting to do in the summer... Shoot for RSI and TASP.

You realize you could just stay at home and take like 2-3 courses from EPGY for like $2400. This would phenomaly boost you at school.

Example, kid finishes calc bc junior year. Take Lin Alg, Diff Equations, Real Analysis over summer. Ok, maybe that's a little excessive, but you get the point. Magically, this kid enters school taking partial differential equations straight from calc bc! :)

Same goes for Physics, etc.

Can someone recommend a good summer program?? I am a senior in hs and have already been accepted to a top 10 liberal arts college. I am in Northern California and affording the program is a priority. So good programs with good fin aid or scholarships will be welcome..

(see above post, except I'm currently a junior)

I'm also trying to find a summer program. After receiving this Harvard Summer School thing, I really want to attend something similar. Does anyone know of any cheaper pre-college summer programs that involve taking a couple of classes and living in the dorms? I'm talking in the $2000-3000 range. Yeah... probably not possible, but I can dream. Or if the program offers merit aid, that's cool. I'm pretty positive my family wouldn't qualify for need-based aid.

tentash2002 and poubelle...

You might want to look into programs at Washington University in St. Louis, University of Pennsylvania, etc. That is if you aren't already aware of TASP, RSI and all of those other uber competitive free programs.

There's always EPGY at Stanford, which was $3300 last year, which does not offer any credit but is a worthwhile experience (I attended last year). I recommend doing a forum search. There's loads more I can't think of at the moment.

Oh yeah, and there's always the numerous UCs...

I got the Harvard Summer School application in the mail today too!!! Does anyone know how hard is it to get scholarships/financial aid for the Summer School???

There are many other summer high school programs at universities where you take classes and are much cheaper.

universities like??
