Harvard's infamous supplemental counselor recommendation...

I have done a little bit of searching... and people have said different things about Harvard's "Part II" counselor recommendation. Some say it's optional (and claim to have confirmed with the administration), while others say it's required (and similarly claim confirmation).

So...

1 - Is Harvard's Part II counselor recommendation required or not? If it's optional... is it basically "required" if you're serious about getting in? (similar to how Harvard has "no minimum GPA requirements" but we all know what that means... lol.)

2 - Will my counselor automatically be asked to fill in that form through the Common App if I list Harvard under "my colleges", or is it up to me to print it and have my counselor send it in snail-mail? Is there a way to do it online/ through the common app?

3 - Do you know of any other top colleges that have similar supplemental recommendation forms? (besides Dartmouth's peer recommendation form)

Thanks!

1 - It’s not required. It’s recommended, however, but it’s not required.

2 - If you want your counselor to fill out Part II, you will need to print it off yourself from Harvard’s website and give it to him/her. It is not included with the Common App (at least, it wasn’t last year).

3 - I’m unaware of any other colleges that have a supplemental recommendation form similar to Harvard’s (besides Dartmouth, as you listed).

great, thanks

I’m at Harvard right now; neither me nor any of my five roommates did the Part II thing.

D is at Harvard also. I do not recognize the form. I don’t believe that D submitted the form, but I am not 100% certain.

My Harvard freshman also did not give that form to his counselor to complete. Frankly we were unaware of it.
