I got my GSP letter from Stern, nothing about England. But that's very very cool if the program exists and I hope you go.

I got in today. woo!!

Got into GSP :-)

Pros and Cons of GSP ??

did u GSP ppl get a letter in the mail a few days before accepted... which talked the opporunities available at nyu...

stonecold23,
I just got the "opportunities mail" from NYU yesterday but thankfully no GSP acceptance

Um, do you guys know if the majority of GSP letters have been sent out??? I don't think my chances for CAS are that great and I'm actually hoping that I get GSPed. Are alot more GSP letters going to be mailed?

when was it dated? I sent my mid-year report last week then that means there is no way that I will be able to get into GSP since everyone who got into GSP already got a decision???

i do believe the majority of GSP have been sent out... though i think some more are coming out...

doesn't NYU ask that you not send mid-year reports?

Who asked if we had to send mid-year reports????

ah, i totally quoted the wrong thing. my apologies.

Went to the GSP session yesterday. Here's what they told us.

35,551 applications to NYU - 21,000 to CAS - that's why the majority of GSP students are referred from CAS

5,000 spots available - 12,000 acceptance letters - including the ones from GSP. So 23,000 reject letters.

GSP is 900 freshman - about 20% of the freshman class

GSP has been around 35 years and it did start as the school for those that needed 'extra help' - that's where the stigma comes from - but back then NYU wasn't the school it is today. (My Dad grew up in NY and said NYU in the 70's wasn't on a lot of radar screens. He had three friends who went there and left!) However GSP has become a lot more selective along with NYU in general. 90% of GSP students were in top 10% of their classes. Mid 50% between 1250-1400 on the SAT's.
Dean compared the program to other Great Books liberal arts colleges. It just happens to be in part of a large research university.

Lots of questions about why we were selected which they shot down pretty quickly. the answer "You were selected because you weren't getting into CAS but here was something on your application (talent, service, leadership) that we want here at NYU - end of discussion."

Question: if all the students are referred from CAS why not just increase the student population in CAS ?

Answer: GSP strongly believes in the teaching philosophy of great books, small classes, and an integrated curriculum. That is not the philosophy of CAS.

They claim that after GSP there is no statistical difference in GPA between GSP students and those that start in CAS.

One big forget it - you won't be transferring to Stern BUsiness School. Maybe 1 person a year gets that.

You're also only guaranteed admission to the school (eg. CAS) to which you applied. If you want to switch majors and that means swithc schools it's a lottery with everyone else. Example: Applied to CAS, accepted to GSP, but you decide you want to do COmmunications which is in a different school. Good luck!

First year struck me that it is like high school but the secodn year there is only one required course - 4 electives. Don't know if those electives are only in GSP or if you can take courses outside GSP.

thanks for typing all that sweenlx; are you gonig to attend?

wow, very informative post sweenlx, thanks alot!

good for the kids who are considering it

i question these statistics, as i do at most colleges that publish them

"90% in the top 10% of there class. Mid SAT Range 1250-1400"...
so this statement says that GSP has more top 10% students than cornell, brown, georgetown, duke and many many top 20 schools... and the sat range says that 25% of gsp students have an sat score above 1400

these statistics imply that gsp is a better school than CAS!

aside from gsp, nyu doesnt even have some of these numbers (the sat range is accurate, however, princeton review says that only 68% are in the top 10%) , so its clear these statistics have been heavily fabricated

Yeah, those numbers aren't possible for GSP. No way.

not defending the numbers - just tellin' ya what they said

numbers did seem high to me too but sure helped the old ego! :)

Wait what do you mean forget transferring to Stern?? As in the people who get accepted to GSP were mainly from CAS, and only a very few got selected from Stern applicants?? Or as in people who are already undergrads somewhere else wanting to transfer into Stern??

What are the Pros and Cons of the GSP, for someone who wants to eventually transfer to CAS?

What is the "opportunities" letter you guys are talking about getting from NYU recently? Does this potentially mean anything? I got Student News and Parent News brochure thingies from NYU on Friday, but no letter anytime recently...
