Would UCB or UCLA reject an IGETC-certified student who will be finishing his prerequisites by the spring term because he has a mediocre essay or a lack of EC's?

A girl from my honors program a few years ago was a perfect 4.0 and won the jack Kent Cooke scholarship. She was rejected from Berkeley.

It is ok through, she is at John Hopkins University now with a full free ride.

What major?

History or other social sciences.

alot of 4.0 applicants get rejected to ucal for biz econ, communications, film. and alot of haas applicants get reject with a 4.0

How about for other social science majors? Like history, political science, psychology, etc.

yeah a handful of them get rejected from one or the other but i highly doubt that a significant amount are rejected from both

I imagine those with 4.0 get rejected for a specific reason. At schools like UCLA and B there is no compromise with not having your lower division requirements for very impacted majors. Even if it is one class, you’re most likely not going to get in for that reason alone.

Well as far as I know. Most 4.0’s get rejected because they do not full fill the requirements. Another reason is extracurricular. Tons of UCB HAAS applicants have nearly 4.0s, but HAAS strongly looks at leadership skills, extracurricular, job etc. My Brother had a 3.8, with Bs in Business Law, Pre-Calculus, a C in Algebra 2 and 1 W. But his extracurricular was excellent, and so he got in. He was rejected by UCLA though, since he was unable to complete Calculus II before transferring.

But, for engineering, your GPA is what count’s the most. Because Engineering schools do not look at those kinds of skills, so it is very rare for 4.0s to get rejected.

u hv no idea how relieved and glad i felt when i read this :p

i second what calvin wrote, I met with the UCLA chancellor, he and the admissions director said those very same words to me.

liek0806 - I just got rejected from UCLA with an overall 4.0, IGETC complete, and good EC’s. I didn’t realize UCLA requires calc for soc majors. So you’re right, it can happen if you are missing a single pre-req. :(

Just because you have a 4.0 doesn’t mean you’re a well rounded person more qualified than someone with a 3.0 who is involved in notable activities outside of school

I hope I don’t get rejected from Cal. I feel like my 4.0 won’t guarantee me anything. I did my IGETC, prepared for my major (no real pre-reqs for linguistics), and think i wrote a decent essay. I have few quality ECs, though. So, I’m just as worried as anyone else (if not more).

there are many cases in which people with 4.0’s, great ec’s, pre-reqs done get rejected from UCLA and Cal. This often occurs more in impacted/competitive majors like sociology, poli sci, communication studies.

@Pinoiako: What about non-impacted majors who fulfilled IGETC and major preparation?

it can happen but it is a lot less than impacted majors.

as an engineering major applicant, i had neither EC related to my major nor good essays. the only reason i was accepted is my major gpa and completion prereqs. i love the idea that how engineering students dont need to be well-rounded.

Engineers just have to be guys or guy-ish girls with questionable showering habits around test dates, or every day if you are Indian.

My friend got rejected with a 4.0 @ Berkeley, Polisci major last year. Later on I learned he only got rejected because he sired immediately for UCLA when admissions were out. UC stat finder says approximately ~90% admission rate for 4.0s it seems like.
