I think the schools just really can’t know if summer melt will be greater this year than during typical years. It’s interesting how careful the wording in that letter is. There’s no encouraging you to remain on the list, just the stark, historical facts.

I wonder if they underestimated their yield? Or, they might have chosen to over-enroll, to allow for a larger than usual “summer melt.”

From the number of CC posters who’ve admitted being on the wait list, Deerfield seems to have a larger wait list than other schools. I think they’re being careful, given the economy, which I think is wise.

Today, my son received form Exeter a letter telling him that although Exeter has reached its target enrollment, it has “decided to keep a number of applicants on the waiting list” and that my son is now “one of these students”.

Did anyone else receive this letter? If so, what do you think it means? Is my son now on some “A+ group” of waitlisted folks? If so, what do you think the chances are now, if any, of Exeter taking him off its wait list and extending him an offer of enrollment? Or is this letter just another way for Exeter to say politely… “fuggit’boutit”?

Thanks.

I got the letter too! I think this does mean something, since they wouldn’t have bothered emailing to make anyone feel special if it didn’t. I don’t think this is an elite group or anything, but that a number of people got taken off the waitlist (not as in accepted) and a number also stayed on. So…yes! I think it means they’re still considering the waitlist. :'D Taking us off would still depend on whether there are openings, though.

How are they going to keep the waitlist viable all the way to August. That is when they will truly know which FP parents are going to cash it in by not writing the big check, and pull their kid out.

Toom & Tues are you guys Full Pay or Financial Aid kids?

Sarum,

We are full pay, and we have already signed an enrollment contract with another superb BS. That school requires us to pay 1/2 of the total tuition for school year '09-'10 by July 1. If and when we send in that big fat payment and Exeter hasn’t by then pulled my son off of its now apparently abbreviated wait list, Exeter will be but a memory growing more distant with each passing day.

I’m full pay and Exeter’s my first choice, so I’m still hoping that there’ll be people withdrawing because of the economy. I don’t know any specifics but in the letter it said there would be an update to all waitlistees in mid-June, so maybe payment dates are different for Exeter?

The letter is nothing special, I got it today too, they said they give em out to ALL waitlisted candidates.
Exeter updates the waitlist students occasionally.

My friend who is on the waitlist did not get one. Exeter is his only hope, and after reading him the last few posts on this thread he seems devastated.

Thanks, hyeonhoy. Your view of this “special letter” from Exeter is about as I thought: nothin’ special. Oh well, at least the Exeter letter was bit nicer than the standard form wait list updates we received from a couple of other BS’s.

PPV-maybe your friend didn’t receive it YET.

Does everyone get it though? I have no clue about the Exeter waitlist, but you said it is for a “special few”. My friend wants to know if he even has a hope…
I told him that… I know him through a talent search and I do not live in his area… He lives in Ohio, so he thinks it would come soon enough.

Pricipalviola- does your friend know that you are holding a spot at Exeter that you are most likely not going to use? Is he OK with that?

Yes, he knows that. If I withdraw he has the same chance of getting in, anyway. Why would he not be OK with that?

Mercy, in light of principalviola’s recent post, I don’t don’t know what to think about this Exeter letter. It now has to mean something. In the end, however, we still have to sit and wait. There remains, of course, some chance of receiving a notice of acceptance from Exeter…but not much chance… but some chance…I guess. Clear as mud.

Cause most people would want to get off the wait list as soon as possible

I paid them a deposit and I have a right to my seat. I understand it can irritate some people, but either way it is my seat. I am keeping them all posted and we are figuring out our own situation asap.

My son got his Exeter letter by email today. Maybe he’ll get a hard copy in the mail too. We’ll see. That said, when we got our Deerfield wait list update last week, it came by email and no hard copy followed. Principalviola, I too hope your friend does get this Exeter wait list update.

Does it say everyone gets it?

They told me that they’ll update all the waitlisted candidates by end of april.
@ toombs: are you on deerfield’s waitlist too?
