Has anyone here turned down UCLA for UCSD?

Im thinking of doing the same...and why did you make that choice?

My best friend did, because he preferred the social scene at UCSD, is a pre-med and really liked the bio department, is a Regents scholar here, and all of his friends went here.

wow… did ucsd impress you that much? last time i was here, this was going on…
http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/university-california-san-diego/897488-ucla-ucsd.html</a>
hahaha jk
what did you like about ucsd brownman?

^LOL

I was impressed by numerous things actually. I like the relaxed atmosphere, the program strength, the proximity to home, and the overall cost.

ucsandiego - i thought premed was legit at both places?

I did. UCSD’s CSE department is better, and I received a regent scholarship here too. Most of my friends still think I’m crazy though.

Physalis: Im prolly gonna major in CSE too! How do you like it at UCSD?

CSE department at UCLA and UCSD are ranked the same.

I chose UCSD over UCLA and Berkeley. I liked the atmosphere and campus at UCSD more than that of UCLA. UCLA seemed to crowded when I went to visit and I liked the city of La Jolla/ San Diego more than LA. Many knowledgeable people told me that the education at UCSD and UCLA are compareable and both were ranked equally in physics. I based my decision mainly on the atmosphere and feel of the college.

as far as Comp Engineering is concerned, im hearing mixed answers. some say la is better than sd and vice versa. what is true here?

A good friend of mine is strongly considering choosing UCSD over UCLA and Berkeley. She was totally set on UCLA before she visited the campus on Admit Day and fell in love. Since she’s a Biology major, I think she’s now leaning towards SD.

I can vouch for you that the CSE staff at UCSD are AMAZING. Viera Kair and Patricia Razcka send out e-mails about potentials scholarships and job openings, along with fun events around campus. In addition, Professors here, such as Beth Simon and Rick Ord, are GREAT! They are really enthusiastic about what they teach and are always willing to help. (I can say that some profs, like Gillepsie or Kube can be boring, BUT, they are very helpful when it comes to office hours)

Nice! Just want I want.

Also, how difficult is it to earn a 3.5 or higher in CSE?

When I said “better”, I wasn’t basing that off of rankings. Nevertheless, when I applied, UCSD’s CSE department was still ranked higher than that of UCLA, and a quick google search brings me to [ARWU SUBJECT 2009 Computer Science](http://www.arwu.org/SubjectCS2009.jsp), where UCSD is clearly above UCLA in CS. Still, ranking only means so much, and your decision shouldn’t be completely based off of that.

I’m also a Computer Engineering major. There are very few of us, and from what I’ve gathered by talking to the upper-class CS/CE majors, it’s supposedly ridiculously difficult like ECE. We’re pretty much taking the exact same classes as CS majors except we also have to take a dozen or so ECE classes, which makes it harder to graduate on time with a decent GPA. I’m only a first year so I can’t say from personal experience, but this is what I’ve been told.

I’m thinking of going to UCSD instead of UCLA too, but for pharmacy.

I know I’ve already posted in this thread… but it really kind of throws me off every time I look at it. I just want to make clear that it’s not WEIRD to turn down higher-ranked schools for UCSD hahaha. I’ve met people who have turned down Cal, Caltech, UCLA, USC, Stanford, etc among other various east coast picks…

A 3.5 in computer science will be quite difficult to achieve. Be prepared to spend many hours in the lab, which is actually really nice/looks brand new.

D is turning down UCLA for UCSD. As a Regent’s Scholar at UCSD she will have opportunities she wouldn’t have at UCLA. Research as a freshman, first choice of classes (even over seniors), small honors seminar, and the bio department is better than UCLA. At UCLA she would be just another face in the crowd. I think as a Regent’s at UCSD she will get special attention and will be able to blossom. This weekend at Admit Day, everyone from the Chancellor on down really went out of their way to court Regents.

My friend chose UCSD over UCLA as a bioengineering major.

I turned down UCLA for UCSD (CSE at both schools)

I’m a transfer applicant, so this likely doesn’t apply to me, but in a way I did choose SD over LA even if I didn’t apply.

I spoke to the Engineering department there, and people here, and based on my stats as a transfer, I was considered a match for not just LA but Berkeley.

In the end, I decided to visit UCLA. It was on my top 3 list of colleges to apply to at the time. The engineering department there was impressed with my stats and encouraged me to apply whereas I overheard them talking to other students and basically gave them the cold shoulder. “Well we look for a little more than that”.

In the end, I just didn’t feel the campus. Uphill climb to residential areas. Science majors are separated from art majors. North & South campus. People just stand around talking.

At UCSD I just felt it was more of a college environment to me. Everything is placed nicely, the library is nicer (in my opinion), the engineering school is right next to the library and not distant from the campus “over there with those science weirdos”. It just made a better impression.

So in the end, I didn’t even apply to UCLA and just kept Berkeley and UCSD as my choices.
