Has anyone received the merit scholarship letter yet?

Just curious about it. When will U of Pitt start sending out the merit scholarship letters?

Looking at last year’s decisions thread it looks as though people began to hear back from the scholarship committee as early as Nov. 1st. I don’t think that is a date set in stone, but I think that scholarship letters may begin to arrive in mailboxes as early as late this week or early next week.

Thanks for the info!

No problem  I will be sure to update the board if I receive a scholarship letter, and I hope that others will do the same.

Update:

My S just got the scholarship letter today and he was awarded Full Tuition Honors Scholarship and was asked to apply to the Chancellor’s Scholarship, which seems to be a far reach to me :-).

^ Congratulations on the full tuition award! Looks like your S is the first on the forum to hear back from the scholarship committee. When did his admissions letter arrive?

Could you post you son’s stats either here or on the "Official Class of 2014 Pitt Decisions Thread " thread.

Thanks in advance

The letter arrived today, Saturday, October 31, but the letter was dated on October 28. We are out of state. Good luck to all!

No I meant when did his first notification of admission to Pitt arrive, not the scholarship notification?

Smart.cookie: the first notification of admission was received on October 10, when he took his last SAT :-).

Do you mind sharing how LONG these essays are? Three seems like a lot to complete in 2 weeks, especially if you want them to be quality… I have 4 tests this week :S

That is why a lot of students don’t bother to apply for the chancellors as they are quite happy with the full tuition scholarship.

I think that’s foolish though, room and board and all that extra stuff can add up to 10k+ a year, if I’m not mistaken…

^Yeah. A double + full meal plan = around $9500-10000 per year, so the Chancellor’s scholarship would be worth up to $40000. That’s DEFINITELY worth trying for.

Yeah lol 3 essays for a chance at 40,000… or sit around for the chance to wonder “what if?” for the next 4+ years and while paying off loans

It depends upon the families’ financial situation plus some of the kids may be getting additional scholarships (engineering dept. plus outside scholarships) that will cover the majority of room & board.

Of course, I am in full agreement that it never hurts to apply :)

^ True, true.

What additional scholarships are available other than the full tuition and $10000 awards for OOS? Are there nursing departmental scholarships that stack onto the tuition awards?

Also, does UPitt deduct outside scholarships from the amount they give you, or are you allowed to keep outside awards and the full value of the money Pitt gives you?

Only need based aid takes into account outside scholarships, I believe. It won’t affect merit scholarships.

smart.cookie. You can keep all outside merit scholarship up to your tuition, room board, and some seemingly arbitrary number for estimated costs. For me I can keep up to $4904 in addition to my scholarship. You get the money in your bank account a few days after the term starts which is super nice.

Yes, everything stacks. Engineering offers scholarships but I don’t know if any other dept. does.
