Has anyone received their copy of Things Fall Apart yet?

Does anyone know when it is likely to be sent? Also, when does housing information for incoming freshmen come out?

suposed to be send aorund now, within this week, and housing mid july

Thank you.

all the dates are on the class of 09 website or the orientation website.

Clearly, college is now what high school used to be.

though i agree with you, what exact way did you mean that?

A little heads up on the freshman reading thingy, just some info I wish I had known. It doesnt count for anything at all!! In retrospect I put wayyy too much time into my little essay and all that jazz. I was of the mindset that "this is my first assignment at Cornell, and I'd better do a damn good job." Wrong. They haul all the freshmen into a 2-hour-long "group discussion" of the book in Barton Hall, which is....interesting. Then you supposedly turn in your paper in your freshman writing seminar class, after which your writing seminar teacher ceremoniously dumps all of said papers into the first trash can he can find because the book has nothing to do with the topic of that class and he'd rather not waste his time. Such is the extent of proceedings regarding the whole freshman book thing. Yes it's a cool idea, but don't get too worked up about it. Just a little word from the wise, or at least, the experienced.

well even if u were to get a grade which i dont think u are...WHERE would they put that grade in, and i mean if thats not enough, how much could it possible be worth,l ol, so ill just do a half - a$ job

but perro, the top 20 essays win $$$ this year. or maybe just $$...any guess as to how much that will be?

perro406: All ~3000 freshmen are in one discussion group? Is that what you meant? 0_o

Yes, that is what I mean. Have you seen Barton Hall? It's big. Very big.

When I say "discussion group" I mean a large scale, moderated thing. They get some top-rated faculty from different departments related to the book (for Kafka they had German Studies people, Psychology profs, etc) and each person on the panel gives a speech regarding the book. Then any student with a set of cojones and something productive to say can step up to a microphone and ask a question or make a statement. That's how it was last year at least.

And yes, they do give money for best essays. However, think about it, the top 20 freshman writers at Cornell are probably amongst at least the top 1000 freshman-age writers in the country. If you think you are that good, then go for it. Otherwise, I don't think it would be worth the effort of spending a lot of time on the thing.

how much money are we talkin'?

I don't know. I'm not one of the top writers in the nation, so I didn't pay attention :D
