Two years ago when I was working as a waiter in a small restaurant back in Malaysia, I discovered my interest in Accounting. I was told by my manager that my hours were going to be cut due to a financial problem that struck the restaurant’s owner. My manager later explained to me that the owner made some serious mistake while managing his funds and that the restaurant would be closing down soon. On my way home, I thought to myself, how amazing it would be if I could evaluate a business’s performance and advise the owners on how to best allocate their funds in order to maximize revenue. I went back home and started researching and stumbled upon accounting. Later that year, me and my family moved to California after obtaining a green card. I registered into a community college and started taking classes related to accounting and the business world. I took up classes like Introduction to business and financial accounting to help me further understand the concepts of accounting. My interest in accounting grew day by day as the semester progresses. I was fascinated with the fact that accounting applies to almost every business out there. I came to notice that every business in the world needs an accountant. Sure accounting wasn’t exactly a walk in the park, but I was ready for the challenges ahead of me. Sometimes I do get stuck on an accounting problem for several hours, but at the end of the day when the account balances, the amount of satisfaction within me is simple out of this world. During my free time I would just practice a few accounting problems just to familiarize myself with all the concepts involved in them. After one full semester my efforts paid off and I scored an A for my accounting class. At that point, I knew that my future would lie in the accounting world but I did not want to make a hasty decision and regret it later. I kept my options open and took more business related classes like macroeconomics. To my surprise, I was also interested in economics. I was fascinated by the fact that the economy manipulates businesses around it. When the economy is bad, companies would do badly and some would go bankrupt. But what if I can be someone who improvises and advise a company on how to use their funds based on the current economy? I did a little research and came up with what seems to be my potential dream job, a financial analyst. To think that I could have the opportunity to help companies in need during a recession fascinates me. I then decided that I should be majoring in both accounting and economics. I believe that both accounting and economics are complementary for each other and that I would really benefit with the knowledge from both field. I do know that everything gets tougher from here, but I won’t give up until the day I can proudly say I’m a certified financial analyst.
