Hi Erika, and thanks! I don’t mean impossible, I think SOM is very competitive, from all I read on here, is what I meant, probably more so than Watson/engineering. And that seems like a good plan for him, if Bing doesn’t work out, transfer to Plattsburgh.

For my son though, I don’t know because he wants engineering, and I don’t think Harpur students can take engineering classes. And he will be a junior, so he is done with gen eds and lower level engineering classes, so I don’t know what classes he could take in Fall. Nothing from UMASS yet.

I tried to link something for you but I don’t know how. On binghamton site search for intra university transfer SOM and it explains what is needed, classes and GPA and such.

Options for Other Students
Many students enroll at Binghamton University in one of the other Colleges or Schools or with an Undecided major. Once here they may wish to pursue a business degree or a business minor. SOM offers several opportunities for such students.
Intra-University Transfer (IUT):
The challenge: Because of the extremely competitive nature of internal transfer to the programs in SOM, we urge you to read this very carefully. It will help you make the most of your opportunities to prepare for a business career.
Preparing academically:
You are required to have completed microeconomics or macroeconomics, and either calculus or statistics by the end of the semester in which you submit your application. Grades of A or B are necessary in each of those courses. Additional courses can be selected which are similar to those required of all SOM majors.
Using your academic advisor (including an EOP advisor if you have one), continue to prepare for a non-SOM major to keep on track for a degree in the school in which you now are enrolled. This is a critically important safeguard for your future in the event that your IUT application is not successful. The ratio of applicants to spaces for recent semesters has been between 5 and 8 to 1, so admission is very selective.
Bear in mind that courses and grades taken at other colleges or universities will be considered seriously in the IUT process together with your recent Binghamton work.
Transfer students who have completed only one semester here at the time of the IUT application, must have earned at least a 3.3 GPA here for consideration. Consult with an SOM advisor about SOM courses you wish to take before your internal application is considered. Access to SOM courses for non-SOM students is increasingly limited.
The application process and filing dates:
Complete the IUT application available from the Admissions Office or the Academic Advisor’s Office in the School of Management.
File your IUT application by November 15 for the following Spring term, and by March 15 for the following Fall. Late applications will be considered as spaces permit. More space is generally available in the Fall compared to Spring.
Wait to hear from us. At the end of the semester in which you apply, our office will obtain your updated transcript from the Registrar, make a decision, and notify you.
Admission criteria:
Most admitted students have had at least 57 credits with a 3.5 GPA or higher, but there is no GPA or credit cutoff for admission or denial. Any written statements about your circumstances will be reviewed carefully. Typically, freshmen in other schools must remain in their school for 1 year before transfer is possible.
Credits earned through Advanced Placement Program courses, International Baccalaureate Higher Level exams (grade of 4 or higher), and all external college courses, including Project Advance (SUPA) or similar courses, completed with a “C” or better, will define your class standing (e.g. freshman, sophomore, junior, senior). That assumes you have provided official transcripts or score reports, as appropriate, to the University. Sophomores have earned at least 24 credits, juniors at least 57, etc. Check your DARS report when applying to assure all previous credits were posted.
Notification:
Your decision is mailed to your campus address, except during vacation periods, when it will be sent to your permanent mailing address.
If you are admitted but decide not to enroll in SOM, please let us know so we can offer the place to another deserving student.
Applications are available in SOM Advising (AA-140) and online: <a href=“Admissions | Binghamton University”>http://www2.binghamton.edu/admissions/

Double Degree:

Ddotjon. Thank you for passing that on! I did read that on their website, but got
a lot more ‘personal’ info from calling the school and talking to the adviser of the SOM.
She made it seem much more realistic of my son getting in by doing A B C,
instead of reading the ‘canned’ info on the website.

Your sons situation is a little trickier. My son can get by with another semester or two or Gen Eds.
Your son seems like he needs to start taking his engineering courses now. It’s an honor to get into
Bing, BUT, if you can’t be an engineer when you graduate, might not be the best choice.

I would definitely call Watson and talk to the advisers there. They can really give you
insight to the answers you might need.

I think talking to the students that got into SOM is Great! I like to hear their personal insight
on how THEY got into their program. Gives me different scenarios on what it
takes to get in. I also found it VERY helpful to talk to the advisor at SOM, since they
are the decision makers. If she had told me that my son needs to have a 4.0 to get
in, I would have known we needed to look else where. But, after talking to her,
I knew my son has an equal chance as anyone to get in.
Might be worth your while. I just didn’t give my son’s name. I was very general,
as I didn’t want to raise any red flags. Not sure if it makes a difference though?

He is waiting to hear back from Watson adviser, but I don’t think Bing is gonna work out. He would like to go there, but he wants the engineering major more, of course. If he can’t get it at Bing, he will get it somewhere else.

I hope you hear good news! If not, I guess you have to go onto plan B or C.
I feel for you, I know all the hard work you are putting into this! Very tiring and Stressful!
Been there, done that! Good Luck! Let me know what you hear.

Thanks…I am trying not to be too stressed…it will work out somehow? Still waiting to hear from UMASS. If anything, I can say transfer applications are much worse than freshman!

good news for those just applying. Binghamton is on the list of schools still accepting applications from transfers as of May 6th anyway. Seton Hall is also. Nice there are openings this late and choices too.

Yes, that’s true but be careful because when you call up the admissions office, the recording says applications are closed for engineering, and some other majors. We called recently to ask a question, and that’s what the recording said.

This might be helpful for transferring into Watson: http://www2.binghamton.edu/admissions/pdf/IUT-Watson.pdf

Unfortunately as an English/History major I don’t know much about anything in that school, but I hope it all works out!

ddotjon, I wouldn’t transfer into any program except a direct-entry engineering program since engineering is your son’s major. He has been away from engineering too long now and needs to get back into the action. Again, I recommend you contact Manhattan College. Perhaps he could commute from Long Island.

So it is all worked out. My son will be at Binghamton in Fall 2014, taking engineering. Watson advising has been super helpful, and I am really happy with the outcome. Cannot say enough nice things about Binghamton so far! It has been an easy transition so far!

ddotjon,

Fantastic news. You were obviously working with Binghamton behind the scenes to get him into the Engineering School. All the best for a great school year for your son. Good work.

Thank you. He is starting in Fall, will be a Harpur student taking engineering classes, with permission, and if all goes well, will apply to transfer to Watson in Spring, as far as I know. So, he is not completely settled yet, but I know it’s what he wants to do, so it’s good. And if all goes well, he will be in Watson in Spring semester.

@Erika9890 If you have any questions about SOM or transferring into it I am here to answer them. I’m a sophomore now and transferred into SOM my freshman, which is pretty unheard of, from Harpur.

@ Serbestofall My son is going into Harpur undecided but, really wants to take the Entrepreneurship program
at SOM. I have talked to Katie in advising, and she is very nice! She told my son to apply for the SOM for the Spring, early October. She said the earlier the better. You must have a high GPA. I was told you need at least a 3.5 to even be looked at.
Do you like the SOM? Which degree are you majoring in? Thank you!

@Erika9890 Your son needs to take three out of the four following classes to be considered: Macro, Mico, Stats, and Calc. As for the GPA it needs to be a high 3.6 or 3.7 to give him a great chance of getting in. The aforementioned classes are very difficult classes with the exception of stats so if he is serious about transferring in he really needs to work hard his freshman year.

To answer your questions. I am an Accounting major as are a majority of people in SOM. It is arguably Binghamton’s most successful program in terms of starting salary and job placement. A lot of people go on to work for the big four accounting firms in NYC after graduation.

I love SOM. It is a close knit community within the greater Binghamton Community. SOM’s goal is for you to develop lasting personal and future business relationships with your peers. These are all individuals that are going to be very successful. In class you do a ton of group projects and you really do develop relationships like non other I have seen in other schools within BU. The classes are small and very interactive and the professors are truly the cream of the crop. They are always there to help. The Internships/job opportunities are endless. I receive countless emails of internships and jobs that are available on a daily basis. I AM NOT EXAGGERATING. Daily i may have 10+ emails with new job offers or internships. This exemplifies the quality of education SOM has to offer which makes us in demand.

Serbestofall Thank you for all the info.! I will pass it on.
Sounds like a Great program to get into. Hard work pays off!
Good luck to you in the SOM!
