@doschicos Listen, it doesn’t matter if it fits into your interpretation of what the ‘Haverford way’ is or isn’t. Haverford itself posted their average SAT scores, ACT scores, and GPAs on their Class of 2022 Stats page. Haverford itself is NOT a test-optional school. Haverford is need-aware for internationals and the consensus on CC is that an international applicant wanting full-aid needs to have killer stats, and has to literally always be at the top. These stats factor into admissions, factor into US News rankings, and therefore, at least implicitly, impact an adcom’s decision. These scores ARE an important part of the process (even though I myself might hate that they are), and any information regarding them, especially from an international applicant needing full aid who is constantly told he needs to achieve well above the mark relative to a domestic applicant to be admitted, WILL help future applicants in determining how much of a ‘Reach’ or ‘Match’ Haverford is for them (I saw you using these labels to recommend Haverford to applicants based on their stats and Chance Me threads yourself, so I assume you somewhat agree with me).
Plus, I included Cambridge A Level and GCSE scores. International applicants, especially those who need financial aid from internationally need-aware schools like Haverford, know far less about the process, and the impact these grades have on their admissions chances- ANY information that includes these details has always been helpful to me.
Haverford may not be as stat-dependent as other schools (this philosophy was one of the reasons why I fell in love with Haverford), but ‘other schools’ is relative- Haverford isn’t a test-optional school, and sending your scores is a requirement. So come on, literally blinding yourself to the impact these scores may have, and discouraging applicants from trying to gain help, or help others, is pretty stupid.
“I honestly don’t see the point it serves as you aren’t seeing the whole application. Common data sets provide statistical data if that is important to you.”
I’ll repeat what I said above. You yourself acknowledge that higher than average scores are needed for acceptance/need based aid for internationals. That’s just a requirement and your reasons for your acceptance were based on other parts of your application that can’t be communicated numerically, not your stats. It’s easy to focus on the parts of the application that are quantifiable because that is readily observable but plenty of high stats kids get turned down (see post 87). You didn’t get in because of your stats. Your stats met a threshold and you got in based on other attributes you brought to the table.
I agree, but stats aren’t the only things I provided. I just feel as if stats are necessary to complete the picture of an applicant for a non-test optional school.
Truthfully, I just wanted to highlight that I had Bs in my exams, and my SAT scores weren’t perfect, to create a more optimistic picture for anyone reading this thread in the future.
First class delivery is Monday - Saturday. Based on the map, it’s 3 days for nearly all of the US, unless you are closer to Philadelphia or in remote locations (Hawaii, Alaska).
@yellowmellow17 - I would suggest you mentally prepare for Tuesday (or even Wednesday). Tomorrow is likely, but there are a lot of hand-offs and sorting and trucks that can add to the time.
Does the acceptance notification mention a date for admitted students days? (I think Haverford calls them Open Campus Days?) My DD has other possible conflicts and it would help to know in advance for planning, just in case.
From my recent visits to both colleges, I think it’s more accurate to say Haverford students think Swatties are stuck-up, and Swatties don’t think of Haverford students at all. In reality the schools are quite similar, and the profile of admitted students is comparable, but Swat has just gotten crazy competitive thanks to the US News rankings. Haverford kids are a bit defensive about it, and carry a chip on the shoulder. When I went to Swarthmore in the eighties, we called it the best school no one has ever heard of (“isn’t that a girls school in upstate NY?”). Fame has changed it into a more intense culture, because only the most driven get in. I wouldn’t get in today, and I think my daughter would be happier at Haverford. I also value the Quaker roots, and I think Haverford’s culture still retains some of that, while Swarthmore not so much.
" I think it’s more accurate to say Haverford students think Swatties are stuck-up, and Swatties don’t think of Haverford students at all." "Haverford kids are a bit defensive about it, and carry a chip on the shoulder. "
I’ve never noticed that. Fords and Swatties actually collaborate on many events, projects, parties, etc in addition to shared academic offerings. I don’t think either group spends much time thinking about let alone dissing the other. The only competition is sports rivalries especially the Hood Trophy which Haverford has won for 22 consecutive years.
I do agree that Haverford embraces its Quaker roots much, much more than Swat.
@amcquick If you look at the HC homepage for last Fri (use the tabs on the right side to navigate back) you will see the size of the packet they sent to accepted applicants. I very much doubt they would send an envelope that large to denied and waitlisted students.
