I am really in love with “crazy-colored” hair like purple, blue, etc. I’ve wanted to do my hair in different colors since middle school and I now have the chance to do so in college. I’m not really concerned with what people think about me, but do you really judge somebody that negatively when they have JUST crazy-colored hair?
Say if you met someone that was dressed modestly, not showing a lot of skin; they had no piercing, no visible tattoos, not even over-the-top makeup. They kind of give off a vibe that they’re the quiet type that studies a lot–but they had vivid blue and purple hair. Because that’s pretty much me. I’m not rebellious, I’m pretty normal (by “normal” standards), and I’m quiet, but I LOVE colored hair. I was just wondering how I’d look to other people if, for the most part, I looked normal except for my hair.
Again I don’t really care about what people think about me, I’m probably gonna get my hair done anyway. I’m just curious as to what people would think if they saw me.
Mom-opinion: You’ve just described half of my kid’s friends from middle school on, and they all look great. It’s just hair; go crazy. If you decide at the last minute that you want a conservative office job, cut + corrective color will get you work-appropriate, albeit expensively.
I’m a particular fan of blue and purple hair, myself.
Do it! I am a mom of three college kids and I just had my mermaid hair done in what is called peek-a-boo highlights. It is my natural grey/blonde on top and underneath, is deep purple, blue and dark pink. I get compliments from moms and kids a like. It’s only hair color.
Do it. Professors have seen it all and your peers will generally love it. You can always dye it back to something conservative when you’re ready to job hunt but depending on your chosen field even that might not be necessary. Worry about that later. For now just have fun.
You are likely to be surprised by just how uninterested in your hair color people are at college (unless you are going to college that has a specific ethos- and you would know that!)
If you do it ombre style like those instagram chicks it will look cool. But if you do it like Ramona Flowers from that scott pilgrim move, I’ll think you’re a weirdo
Amen about the clean up, my 16 yo has destroyed her bathroom with all the manic panic colors she’s used. We’re deep south and crazy colored hair is everywhere.
The grandmothers here are very big on rose gold and lilac hair, so it’s not just a young kid thing.
I say go for it. I plan to dye mine when I reach university. I figure that my future profession might not allow dyed hair, and since I wasn’t allowed to dye it in high school, I only have four years to go crazy.
It’s literally the first thing my daughter did when she left her uniform school. It’s fine. Hair grows. Or you can dye it back if it’s not working for you.
Nobody generally cares. Honestly, even before I went to college someone would have to be doing something pretty wacky with their hair for me to both take notice and judge. More often than not I only notice someone’s hair color if I particularly like it. Same with hairstyles actually.
If you’re gonna go crazy with your hair, now’s the time! As others have said, you can always recolor it or grow it back out if needed.
That said, be courteous and make sure to clean up after yourself when you’re coloring your hair. I had a suitemate my freshman year that liked to dye her hair and always left the bathroom stained. Don’t be that person.
