So for my college choices, I narrowed down to a few schools that have online degrees so I can stay at home. They’re the AI of Charlotte, Full Sail, SCAD, Academy of Art, RCAD, and RISD. I noticed how the tuition prices are like +$20k per year and such. But since I’m planning to do 2 years at Midlands Tech to get my CORE credits and some art classes, the total cost of the full tuition at the art schools are going to be about $60k depending on which college I attend. Does anyone have recommendations on which school(s) to apply for?
RISD. Well respected and well known.
What are you planning on majoring in? Note that to transfer into a program at RISD (and many other art schools like it) you’d be transferring in as a SOPHOMORE not a junior (even though you might have 2yrs worth of classes in general, that’s usually when their program begins for that major’)
Just keep that in mind and ask these schools really detailed questions about transferring credits so you can plan ahead. In general art schools follow this pattern:
Freshman Year: each semester (3) art studios of “foundation classes” (generally drawing, 2d/graphic design, 3d/sculpture ) and (2) liberals
Sophomore Year+: now you’re in your major and your studios/art classes will be that departments track of classes + your liberals
Also to follow-up I’m not sure what you mean by many of those schools having “online degrees” - I’m pretty sure SCAD and RISD in particular are only on-campus, studio based programs. Anything offered online may be just for “fun” and not be for college credit.
if you are interested in art , look into VCUART in Richmond Va . one of the highest rated design schools in the country.
@ArtAngst I’m interested in doing animation and maybe minor in illustration or visual design. SCAD has an eLearning program for their majors but the tuition is still the same.
I teach in an art department of a small liberal arts college - since cost, distance etc are important factors I’d highly recommend you look at taking courses with actual in-person studio time art classes either at a community college, state college or local university. It’s important to do the work in a classroom setting since you’ll be learning much more from your instructors with real time feedback and fellow classmates as you figure things out together.
Also if you haven’t found it already, this board would be more helpful with ideas on schools within your area: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/visual-arts-film-majors/
