Thanks CuttingEdge, that’s good to hear. I’m guessing it’s a general comment: they do want everyone that interviews to come (Nate and I discussed that at length at the beginning of the interview, talking about how everyone that interviewed at least deserves a full tuition).

I really hope that I get a letter tomorrow/soon…we’ll see.

the retreat is fun I heard but it’s not 100% required. The other thing is for those of you that come here and decide to live in Forbes Hall (the honors dorm) you miss out on all of the early move-in orientation for Forbes Hall, which I knew my friend who went to the retreat last year was kind of bummed about because all the other people had already gotten a head start on meeting each other and making friends, etc.

Regardless, the retreat is also fun and if I remember correctly, 3 days at a lake?

Ahhh, that’s interesting. I thought the retreat was first then the UHC orientation. My son does want to live in Forbes very much. It was his understanding that the Ch.Scholars were expected to be at the retreat and I am sure he will want to go. Hopefully he won’t miss out on too much fun at Fobes–if he gets into it.

d101 what’s the news? How is your son feeling?

Everyone else: keep us updated and let us know if you get a big red UPS envelope this week! I am keeping my fingers crossed for you!

I also interviewed last saturday… I haven’t heard back yet, but I didnt send in the cs app untill early february… they called me a couple weeks ago for the interview, I still can’t tell whether interviewing towards the end of the process was detrimental or not… but I’ve been checking my mailbox compulsively since the interview… :)

im just thorwing this out there btw… the number of cs interviewees on this board is a little crazy…

its down to UMich and Pitt for me right now. I’m leaning towards Pitt right now though (I’m from MI and really want to go out of state, plus I really liked the philosophy of the Pitt Honors College) and the CS would definately make the decision a lot easier :)

Right now physics is my favorite subject, buuuut I’ve been doing some research on Pitt’s BioE program, and it seems interesting as well…

but thanks, congratulations on your son earning the scholarship! Is he going there for sure next year?

To be honest, I just hate all this waiting more than anything else… whether the news is good or bad, I just hope that I recieve my decision soon :)

good luck to everyone else who is waiting to hear back!

You and my son seem similar in your interests. Son is interested in Bio E at Pitt, although he is not really considering Med school seriously at this time. Basically, he loves math and science and thinks engineering is just a really good respected major that you can do a lot with. Like you, he would say physics is his favorite subject.

Like Umich for you, Illinois is in-state for us, and an excellent engineering school.

Son is also interested in philosophy. although he has never taken any formal philosophy course, he is a deep thinker and enjoyed writing the essays and the philosophical discussions. he is interested in the BPhil, study abroad, and other great programs Pitt has to offer.

So many people that were interviewing were science/engineering people. This does not bode well…they do try to diversify the majors they give it to, right?

I said I was looking into Molecular Biology/HPS/Spanish, but a lot of people seem to have a science + philosophy major combo (they suggested I go for Philosophy instead of HPS, which is nice, but seems to be quite common among the people interviewed).

I’m not premed though, so maybe that’ll help a little?

Oh Silvy that must’ve really made your heart jump!

I do think they like breadth…GuitarRckr, I actually thought your major interests sounded like a good combo. My son is really interested in Philosophy as his major but will double with Microbiology. One of the interview questions they asked was for him to pick four majors he liked and I think he mentioned anthropology and African Studies. They mentioned those things in the letter they sent him.

Thanks d101 for the reminders about Staal and Semi-alaskan! They haven’t checked in lately…

Are you all thinking Forbes or the SPACE housing or just Towers or what? My son is definitely thinking Forbes and is working on his essay.

Jamiecakes, what is the “SPACE” housing? I don’t recall hearing about that, unless I just can’t figure out the acronym.

I am definitely thinking of applying to Forbes. I really liked the community they had there, and it’s near a lot of different things (restaurants, book stores, the university grocery store, etc.)

Also…I just noticed that a lot of times, I post right after another person made a post. I swear, I am not constantly on this thread - I swear it’s coincidence :-P

I think SPACE housing is a housing group of engineering students, science kids. There are a bunch of housing groups (SPACE, quiet, honors-but-not-forbes, and some others.)

SPACE is engineering-only students. This year it’s 4 floors, 3 are all male, the 4th is female. some students are honors but most of them actually are not honors engineering students (they go to forbes :P)

between SPACE & Forbes I’d pick Forbes hands-down (which is why I’m living there this year) although SPACE was my backup.

Also to Jamiecakes: you can tell your son not to worry too much about the essays. If you apply you’re basically guarunteed in (1 person was rejected, a few waitlisted, but all the WL students got in).

I’m keeping my fingers crossed for all of you waiting to hear about the CS!

Hi! I’m interviewing next week and I’m wondering if anyone has any advice as far as preparing for the interview? I’d really appreciate any information!

I didn’t realize they were still interviewing. You can sort through this and the other chancellors thread for some insight. My son’s interview had two parts. The first was a warm up session with several honors students which gave him time to ask questions and relax and as a recruiting opportunity for them (if they are interviewing you, they want you for their school).

Then he met with three professors and had a “friendly interrogation”. The profs played the devil’s advocate to question and challenge my son’s thoughts and opinions. It fun and friendly and interesting for my son. He enjoyed the interview very much and there was a lot of give and take.
