Health forms???

I have a few questions about the health forms as an incoming freshman. In the health center website, there were a bunch of forms that are entrance requirements. In the TB Screening Page in EMF Forms Section, a question asks “Is your country of origin any country other than the United States of America, Western Europe, Canada, Australia and New Zealand?” I marked yes, but then I saw that if I mark yes to this question, I would have to do a T-Spot test at Duke Student health. I was born in Asia, but I’ve been living in U.S. for the last 7 years, so I’m not sure why I need to do one. Should I mark yes and do the test or no (assuming that these questions are for students who are currently abroad)?

Bump…

TB can stay latent for a long time without active progression of the disease or symptoms. Since the US and many developed countries no longer mandate TB vaccination, a person who originated in a part of the world where TB is prevalent and who may be carriers has the potential to cause very devastating outbreaks in unprotected populations. So the purpose is basically to protect those who do not have immunity against carriers.

This is actually logical since according to wikipedia, ~80% of the population in some Asian/African countries can test positive for TB (though I’m not sure whether the test is the Mantoux skin test because the commonly used BCG TB vaccine is known for giving false positives in that test).

So in answer, I think you should go get that test if you have never had it done. It’s very quick, just a subcutaneous injection and then a readout in 3 days or so. But I guess if you’ve had the BCG as a child and have never had a negative skin test result then you’ll need a chest X-ray instead.

i’m in the same boat as silversoul.

as an incoming freshman though, i wont be arriving on campus until o-week. as of right now im still “not in compliant” as far as my immunization status goes. what would this mean in terms of move-in and scheduling for the test since i saw no (discernible) deadline for this test?
