My student will be required to have TB screening at UR's Health Center because of the country she was born in. The health form indicates that we will receive an email to this effect. For travel planning purposes, how early will we have to arrive to complete this requirement?

I will check with the student health center tomorrow and let you know. I really doubt they'd make her come early for this purpose. Because you live outside the US, your daughter would be welcome, but not required, to attend international student orientation. Even though she's a US citizen, we know that lots of TCK's don't feel particularly "American" and appreciate this opportunity. It also gives them a few extra days to acclimate and get settled before all the chaos of the school year begins. I'll let you know about the TB screening tomorrow.

For others who are out there reading this, UR does require the menigitis vaccine for all incoming students as well. If you are decided on UR, you might beat the rush to your doctor's office for this since lots of colleges require it.

I presume this is the web page where you learned of this requirement:

Health and Safety

Students do not need to arrive early for this. The Health Center will handle these screenings when students arrive for orientation.

Thank you for this information.

UR Admissions: What are "TCK's" you mention in the previous post, and when is the international orientation? We have a US mailing address, so I believe we may not be getting the international information.

TCK is the acronym for "Third Culture Kids"--those that grow up outside the culture of their own nationalities. We see lots of "Americans" by passport who've grown up outside the US because of their parents careers who associate more strongly with the culture of the country where they've lived than they do with US culture, but even then they aren't "of" the nation where they live either. Sometimes coming "home" is difficult when they've never really lived here, but everyone thinks of them as Americans but they don't act so much like the dominant culture. It's a very interesting group of kids. Richmond is lucky to have quite a few of them, so if your daughter can be described this way, she'll have peers with similar experiences to relate to. I'm at home today so I don't have all the dates at hand. We would have classified her as an "American Abroad" when she applied (most likely) if you are living abroad and she's in a school there. Those things would have triggered us to see her a bit uniquely even if you have a postal address in the US for convenience of mail delivery. I'll be back in the office on Tuesday and will post it or you can send a message to intladm@richmond.edu and someone who is there tomorrow can get you the dates.

Cheers!

This describes my student who is actually a dual American/+ other citizen who has lived out of the US her entire life. Her older brother (also dual) had a somewhat challenging adjustment once attending college in the US. It really took me by surprise as I am the American parent. I was surprised he felt so "foreign" in my/our country. Good to know there is so much empathy at UR and your recognition of her special unique-ness :).

According to the academic calendar, the International Student Orientation is August 17. Does the school produce a list of area hotels?

Lady Slipper,

You can find a list of area hotels on our Web site by visiting:
University of Richmond

There are several new hotels in the area (about 10-15 minute drive to campus) that might not show up on this list. The University of Richmond is located in the suburbs of Richmond; so, there are no hotels within walking distance to campus.

For more information about the city, tourism, and hotel information you may also want to check out the City of Richmond's homepage: Visiting Richmond, VA :: Virginia Tour Information
