Hearing Before M10?

I heard that sometimes a school will send out acceptance emails before M10 - does anyone know if this is true?
Also, some people I know received acceptance packages earlier this week - NOT from the big schools - from small BS and day schools. Is that the norm as well?

The M10 “rule” is one agreed to by TSAO schools. Other schools do as they wish.

I’m sorry but what is TSAO and how do I find out if a school is part of that?

The Ten Schools Admissions Organization includes these schools:

Choate
Deerfield
Hill
Hotchkiss
Lawrenceville
Loomis Chaffee
Andover
Exeter
St. Paul’s
Taft

(Hmmm… My link doesn’t seem to work from here, but if you type that into your browser, it should resolve OK.)

thanks - so any school not on that list may not adhere to the M10 I assume

Correct. Many go along with it by convention, but are not obligated, and many have their own schedules.

In my area Catholic schools have an earlier decision date (and acceptance date). But most day schools go by M10. In other parts of the country day schools are earlier - there are frequently discussions on here about what to do if your deposit due date at a local school is prior to M10.

Schools will often list the date on their website, usually under the “how to apply/timeline/what we need (etc.)” tab.

I received several emails this week reminding me that the decision will be sent out on March 10 and where to log in. Maybe I am being paranoid but the “we have enjoyed getting to know the applicant. Thank you again form your interest” line sounds like rejection to me.

I got one from Exeter today that says. Anyone’s different?

Congratulations on completing your application to Phillips Exeter Academy for the fall of 2016!

On March 10th you will receive your admission decision via email at this address. We anticipate decisions being sent out no later than 8am EST on March 10th.

By agreement with our peer schools in the Ten Schools Admissions Organization we will not discuss any specifics of these decisions until March 15th and we ask that if you have questions, you hold them until that time.
We thank you for your interest in Exeter and wish you good luck on March 10th!

And Happy Hunger Games!

Don’t read anything into the message you are receiving. They are standard form letters

May the odds be ever in your favor <:-P

Yes I’m aware they are standard messages. I was wondering if they have multiple versions.

Mine was the same as yours. It would be nice if our version means that we are admitted.
But I think that’s what reading between lines means. If they do, it still wouldn’t mean anything. I doubt that they are giving hints to who is admitted by using different versions of a routine message.

At the risk of getting people all riled up, I’m going to say that there are exceptions — even within TSAO.

I’m specifically referring to cases where there are special merit and/or need/merit scholarships and they need to interview finalists in the weeks leading up to M10. While they don’t tell you specifically that the kid got in, it is implied (they wouldn’t be interviewing kid unless he/she was admitted).

I would assume that all the mass emails about decision dates, etc. at this time are form letters. I don’t think with the volume of applications that they are going to send out different emails. It is easy to try and read things into these communications. Good luck on M10 everyone.

They may not be doing it in this case or at this point in the game, but their applicant systems do work exactly this way. They can place applicants on communication tracks and different content will sent based on certain criteria or coding.

Never thought of different communication tracks. We have not received any mass emails. Vacakid has gotten a few from one AO which were personal. I guess it is decent news from that school and still a crapshoot for the others.

Some schools seem to keep their name out there using this method. Others, it doesn’t matter as they will get the applicants regardless. I could tell my daughter was on a track at Loomis Chaffee and emails on various topics came throughout the process.
