I applied for the William Randolph Hearst Foundation U.S. Senate Youth Program Scholarship ($5000, free trip to D.C. for juniors and seniors who are elected class officers) and found out I made it into the top ten in my state. Those ten will now be interviewed, and two will be chosen for the award. Does anyone from Oklahoma or really any state know what the interview consists of? I know the application process varies greatly from state to state (I had to take a government test to get this far, while others have to write essays and such), but any point of view is appreciated. The interviewers are social studies teachers, so I guess it will be a grilling on current events?

bump bump bump

Hey Audiophile-GREAT JOB! My D will be sitting for the test portion next week. I have another thread on CC about this. Kids said that it was helpful to know about the background of the Hearst Scholarship, current events, some state gov. and federal gov. Just about anything. I am sure you will do fine---heard the test is a beast. Good luck and let us know how it goes. momnipotent

From Oklahoma? Yes, I am, and I'm also in the top ten... However, for some reason my school didn't recieve the letter until today (Oct 26)... so basically, I'm writing the essay and filling out the information sheet tonight.

Did you recieve your numerical score on the test? If you don't mind me asking, what was it?

Anyway, the interview will probably be all about current events and especially about whatever essay topic you choose.

Best of luck! I'd love to be in the top two and get to go to D.C! (And it would be awesome if two CCers made it)

Hey rifles4watie, congratulations on making it! were you at the edmond testing site?

sorry about your late notification, that's lame.

I got a 91, and another kid from my school who's in the top ten got a 95. The highest score was a 96 i believe, and the highest score possible was a 106.

I've been reading newspapers all week obsessively trying to prepare for the interview. I'm already pretty aware of current events, but not razor sharp like i should be.

Good luck!

I was NSU in Tahlequah.

It is lame :(, but I've completed the essay question first draft. I'm not sure I'm satisfied with it, but we'll see. :) I'll probably obsess about it until tomorrow.

That's very impressive that your school garnered two top tens.

yeah, we were pretty psyched. apparently no one from our school has ever even made it this far, and it one year we got two people. I'm from Norman North High School, btw.

Ah, ok. Norman North... I think I know someone from your school. He was at Boys State this year and was an alternate (I think) for Boys Nation (or he at least was nominated for it, but I can't remember for sure)... I talked to him before our BN interviews. That's why I'm so interested in this USSYP, it sounds a lot like Boys Nation and that was an awesome week!

I'm from Claremore HS. Congrats again on having two top tens in one year; we've only had two in the top ten ever and they made it several years ago :)

I'm dying to know rifles, how did your interview go?

Good, I think.

But at this level everyone is poised and articulate in an interview situation. Will be interesting to see what happens. I spoke to one of the other finalists, a guy from Mannford.

Btw, what time was your interview? Mine was 1:00...

Mine was at 9:30, the second one of the day.

No word yet, I'm guessing.

Mr. Curtright from the Education Dept. said we'd know in mid-December

Hey dudes, PM me if you get selected a finalist. I was a semi-finalist for my state as well. Still waiting for the ultimate decisions.

hey guys!

I'm from Iowa and will be in DC come March 4-11th for the Senator Youth Program. Who else is going?

congrats ames,

as far i know, oklahoma kids dont know yet--any day now though...

Yeah Audio, the State Dept. of Education's website says notification of Oklahoma delegates will be between Dec 5th and 16th... any day now.

And congrats Ames! thats awesome!

Hey Ames-----GREAT JOB! The program looks to be a valuable experience. Did your school notify you or the Dep. of ED?

Department of Education

I got a phone call at school, and my state contact told me that I will be getting some mail later.

Hey, and best of luck to all you guys! I'm been lurking around this forum for a bit, and everyone seems really cool. It would be tons of fun to meet everyone in March!

I just found out I'm one of the Oklahoma delegates. My mom got the letter this afternoon and called me at school to tell me. I'm so excited!!!!

My best friend is the female delegate from WA. She's so excited!
