Can anyone tell me about this program?

Program funded by Heart Foundation. Two students from each state chosen (+Dept of Defense Schools and Puerto Rico) for a total for 104 students. Great program that inluded paid week trip to DC AND $5000 scholarship. Google youth senate and read more.

I am interested in applying for this scholarship (the D.C. week sounds amazing!), and I'm curious what this beast of a "test" is like, so I'm reviving this thread.

Will past test-takers give me some clarification:

Did you have to go somewhere and take the test, or was it just a paper exam shipped to your school?

Were the test questions specific to your state or more a general government exam? Were they essay or multiple choice?

Does the foundation have a slight left or right wing bias?

Did your history teacher have to coordinate it or did you do everything yourself?

Feel free to contact me. I attended last summer. Great opportunity and competition is fierce.

Correction. I attended in March.

Hi thykingdomcome

This is a great program and I encourage you to go for it!

I'm a mom so I don't know the specifics of the test but I can tell you what I know of my child winning in our state. Every state handles it in a different way, but in general the content of the test is handled by each State Board of Ed and not the Hearst Fdn, so any politics are state-related. The test was administered at school and sent to the State Board to be graded, top 10 chosen for interviews, 2 finalists.

Someone from your school must contact the state coordinator listed on the website http://www.hearstfdn.org/ussyp/ to get the ball rolling. You should look into this soon because it goes quite quickly in Sept.
Good luck!

Thank you both, I will pm bkb1958 for a more detailed student perspective.

I researched this program last year. One policy restriction - the applicant must attend high school in their state of legal residence. So all of the boarding school students across the nation are not allowed to apply!

can some one tell me where i can find good study material on for this test

i was selected as a semi-finalist for this program. i go in for an interview in November. can someone please let me know what they ask during this interview? anything would be appreciated!
