I applied to W&L and also as a candidate for the H.J. Heinz Scholarships. Did anybody else get the Heinz Scholarship notification? Or just the George Washington Honor Scholarships?

Is the Heinz Scholarship the Jewish one with the extra application?

If not, it might be a regional thing. The alumni from my peninsula (the eastern peninsula of Maryland) have a separate scholarship from the GWHS, and I got notification of that.

No. The Heinz Scholarship isn't the "Jewish one" (or else I wouldn't qualify). It is not affilated with the GWHS; no additional essays, just your application by Jan. 15.

Interesting, I haven't heard anything about it. Isn't the app normally due Jan. 15 anyway?

Oh, I knew I had heard of it before. I would explain it, but there's a better article about it on the W&L website:

If you're applying to GWHS, your app was due Dec. 15

RD is Jan. 15 (as well as Heinz Scholarships).

Willywonka: Do you have any stats on how many apply for the scholarship? I know there are only 4 winners but not sure if how many apply. Of course, the number applying for Heinz would be less than those applying to W&L.

The only info I got was a small packet...no stats or anything, just the what the program is. I believe it was an incentive for me to apply (since they waived my app fee).

None of the articles that came up on the W&L website search said anything about the number who apply each year, just that three seem to have been selected each year since the program's inception.

The date of the news articles which announce the selected students (early June) lead me to believe the process goes like this: ED and RD admissions goes as usual, with May 1st as the notification for enrollment deadline. After W&L has the class of whatever year (in our case, 09) set in stone, it goes through the financial aid information to determine what "disadvantaged" exactly means, and which of the enrolled students qualify as being disadvantaged. From there, the school offers the scholarship to three people and waits on their acceptance of it. I say that I think the school has to offer and wait for acceptance because the summer internships may conflict with some students' plans, and it would be necessary to make sure the student is prepared to fulfill his or her end of the deal before the three finalists are announced. If any student declines, another is offered.

Again, that's what I would guess. If I'm accepted and I enroll, and if I'm offered the Heinz scholarship, I would definitely agree. Not in spite of the internships, but because of them. It seems like a great, great opportunity.

I got something about the Heinz Scholarship too, except it was just an informational packet and an offer to waiver my fee if I applied. So I applied by Dec 15 (I also did the GWHS).... but I don't remember ever seeing an application for the Heinz Scholarship.... is there one? Or maybe I just filled it out and sent it in right away and forgot about it. shrug

So is there actually another application for the Heinz Scholarship that I happened to miss?

A statement on the GWHS says that it's the only application we need to fill out to be eligible for all scholarships at W&L, so I'd say there's no extra Heinz form.

Great, thanks willywonka! <33

No problem, and good luck (<3).

To clarify: Heinz Scholarships do not require GWHS Application form. It is separate.
