Help!A question for current English Majors, please??

hi i am a soon-to-be freshman at ucsb and am planning to major in English in the college of letters and science My question is concerning the foreign language requirement necessary in order to get an English major.

according to the website:

3.2.3 Foreign Language Requirement
There are two ways to satisfy the foreign language requirement for the English major: Option 1 or Option 2. Option 1 is the recommended way to fulfill this requirement for all majors.

To fulfill Option 1, students can either complete the fifth quarter in any foreign language taught at UCSB or demonstrate equivalent ability at the prescribed level by taking a placement exam. (Consult the General Catalog and language departments for information on placement examinations; consult the English department undergraduate advisor about other means of satisying the requirement that may apply to a student's individual situation). Foreign languages other than those taught at UCSB may be considered by petition. Language classes taken in fulfillment of Option 1 may be taken P/NP through the fourth quarter, but the final quarter must be taken for a letter grade.

if possible could a current english major clarify the first option and what it entails, I am thinking of taking latin as my foriegn language, so would that mean that I would have to take 5 different classes of Latin, each one quarter long? Also, if that is indeed the case, i have a backup plan since I have taken up to Spanish 3 in high school with straight A's in all of those courses, so could i just take 2 more quarters of spanish (ie, spanish 4 and 5?) and if so how would i go about registering for those classes? (could i just register for 4 and 5 right away without taking 1-3 or telling the advisors about my spanish classes in high school?)

Thanks a lot for your responses and sorry for the long post!!

if you completed 3rd year spanish in high school, that is equivalent to taking 6 quarters of any foreign language at the college level. if you refer to the a-g requirements from high school, it says you must take 2 years of a foreign language, but 3 is recommended. if you took 2 years in hs, then you must take one quarter of any foreign language at the university, if you took 3 years in hs, then you’ve finished the requirement

holy crap!! thank you so much for helping me !! it is such a relief to know that i dont have to take foriegn lang AGAIN! Thanks Tr1p7s!!!
