I'm currently a Chemical Engineering major but I've recently been contemplating change. I've heard nothing but horror stories about Chemical Engineering in general and the impact it has on GPA. Three other majors I have been deciding between are:

Biochemistry

Neuroscience

Psychobio

I am most interested in Biochemistry, but the Chem 20 series (which I would be forced to take) is supposed to be a lot more difficult than the Chem 14 series, which I could take as any of the other two majors.

All have the con of poor job/salary prospects with only a bachelors, but what are the other pros and cons, from a premed's perspective? Help!

Neuroscience and psychobio are the more popular majors for pre med people. I haven’t really heard of anyone taking biochem, mostly because of its difficulty (according to a few upperclassmen I’ve talked to). And yes, I have also heard Chem 20 is harder. I’m taking Chem 14, and it’s a lot of work, but it’s relatively straightforward.

Question: Are you trying to find a major that will be “easiest” for getting into med school? If you are truly interested in biochem , I say go for it. It will be a lot easier on you if you study what you really like. Chem 20 will only last for 2 years. But what about the other 2 years, when you will have to take all the upperdivision courses? If you’re not really interested in psychology for example, what are you going to do once you reach the upperdiv courses for psychobio?

However, if you want to get into med school the “easiest” way possible, then yea psychobio is the best way to go. The material that they cover is relatively easier, according to my friend who’s going to med school.

Talking to a counselor can really help. Collegeconfidential people are helpful, but remember, the counselors and school resources are there for you!

I could definitely go for Neuroscience, and Psychobio sounds like it would be very dull. How about Physical Science? I’m not quite sure what it entails, only that it’s full of premeds. Is it easier, harder, or about the same as Neuro and Biochem?

actually biochem and chemE B.S. have pretty good job opportunities. psychobio and neuroscience… not really.

I actually know a TON of biochem majors… maybe because i’m a ChE major so I meet them in my chem and chem lab classes. If you stay in ChE, you always have a backup. ChE degrees at the bachelor level can already get you really decent paying jobs, so its worth the extra work.
