Have you tried meeting with the teacher for extra help? Asked for tutoring--either privately (with your folks paying) or thru a classmate? How about study groups with friends who love chem? My S (who is a math/science kid) had some struggles with chem as well (very weird teacher). He still got thru it (as everyone must one way or another).

Sometimes teachers allow you to do extra credit projects if you ask--he did (it was making a stuffed animal MOLE--yeah, very punny). There was a different project for every quarter & many of the kids did it to boost their grade in the class (the teacher started the class in the middle of the book & then in the 2nd quarter got to the beginning of the book--by then most of the class was totally lost). For some reason, there are a lot of kids at the HS who are not fond of chem--wonder why?

Chem is sooo hard....gawd you have no idea. I hated chem soo much....I hated chem with every fiber of my body. I never hated anything more intensely, maybe except for physics.

And by the way it IS possible to be a B math student and an F chem student...because I was. I regularly got As on my math test in sophmore honors and I regularly got Fs in regular chem tests.

Well, I have a test on tuesday for chem and its like this huge test because it covers from Bohr's atomic model to like quantum numbers to electron configurations! God, I hate Chem.

I took the test for electron configurations two weeks ago. Right now, we're studying the periodic table and how it is organized as well as ionization energy and electronegativity.

I am taking AP chemistry this year. Can anoyne give me links to good chemistry websites that list important chemistry things that need to be memorized (strong acids, bases, polyatomic ions, priciples, etc., formulas)? There is so much memorizing I have to catch up on. Do you all think if you memorize everything (along with some thinking), you will be fine? I think chemistry is just memorizing facts and tying them together. anyone agree?

I think in Chem it's important to memorize/learn the basic concept of something. It's then a LOT about manipulating that information that you were taught and applying it to different situations. It can be verrry difficult, but I found (I took Honors Chem and AP Chem the last two years... I miss it so much now lol) that sometimes all it takes it one different explanation of a topic and it just totally clicks and then it's almost easy. I'd say go to any extra help your teacher is willing to give, or you may want to consider a tutor (like someone said, an adult or student) but my teacher, at least, was good enough in my case, depends though.

I think you can study and memorize on your own which will help, but sometimes it just doesn't click, more-so than in bio or environ. Practice also helps a lot, the more you can do different types of problems the easier they'll be.

I took the chemistry test and I bet I did horribly. Out of the 16 girls in my class, 8 failed. In the other class 6 failed out of 20. I am beginning to think that its not the students but its her.

^Alot of students just aren't good at Chemistry. The same thing happened to my Chem class...more than half got a 60% or lower on the last test we had. I go a 55%, but it was hard and I didn't study :D . She tells us that if we're having trouble with Ionic Compounds, then there is no way we're going to make it through stoichiometry.

i got a B in regular chem both semesters with a teacher who didn't teach ANYTHING. but i'm taking ap chem this year (senior year grades dont even matter) but i have a 93.4 because i have the greatest teacher in the world (exaggeration). but i am a math person so chem is a little easier for me. so bascially, if you have a bad teacher, id say drop the class but if your teacher is average (you can study on your own and pass) try harder and you'll do better.

and i think im going to take the sat chem just for the heck of it to see what i get. i got 700 in bio and i didnt know what i was doing but i actually know what im doing in chem so i think i will get 700+ even without taking the full class.
