I’m a junior thinking about next year, and I want to take Spanish 3 but I’m not sure I’ll be able to fit into my schedule. These are the classes I want to take next year:
AP Lit
AP Gov
AP Econ
AP Bio
AP Stats
College astronomy (Non-AP)
Band
I want to major in psychology which is why I’m taking AP Stats and Biology, but Spanish is important too, and I also don’t want to quit band as it is a passion of mine. Should I try to not take Spanish next and take an entrance exam? What should I do?
Your prospective schedule is very similar to my current one, except I have different electives and Spanish IV.
Is Spanish III the highest level of Spanish you’ll be able to take in high school? Are you not planning on minoring/majoring in Spanish in college? If so, I honestly wouldn’t jump through hoops to try and take Spanish III over Band (which may be an important EC of yours). I went through great lengths to take Spanish IV this year because it was the very last Spanish class in the course progression sequence at my HS (which does not offer either of the AP Spanish courses) and I was one of the very few students in the entire school who both was a candidate for having four years of foreign language AND actually enjoyed Spanish and wanted to continue on with it after Spanish III. I also plan on doing something related to Spanish in college, so the course was very, very important to me.
If you MUST have Spanish III, I suggest that you find an accredited online provider that you can take it with on top of your regular schedule.
Are AP gov and econ full year courses? If they are, drop one of those and take Spanish. Or drop astronomy. Spanish is more important than astronomy or a second social science. Colleges want to see foreign language
Your schedule is very similar to the one I have now (senior), except I have different electives and Spanish IV.
Unless Spanish III is the highest possible Spanish course you can reach or you want to major/minor in Spanish, I wouldn’t suggest jumping through hoops to take Spanish III senior year, especially if it means getting rid of Band (which could be an important EC for you).
I went through great lengths to take Spanish IV Honors this year, despite scheduling difficulties, due to the fact that it is the very last course in our Spanish sequence (which does not offer AP) and that I want to, at the very least, minor in Spanish when I am in college. I eventually found an accredited online provider that offered it, and I am taking it alongside my main school schedule and other online classes.
If you must have Spanish III and you have a strong foundation in Spanish already, I suggest you take it online along with your physical classes, if you have access to any online programs.
Drop Astronomy and take Spanish - having only level 2 will block you at many colleges (selective colleges typically want 3 or even 4).
Perhaps take Honors English 12 instead of AP Lit in order to make your schedule more manageable? Choose the best teacher (among HEnglish 12 or AP lit).
Astronomy is required to graduate, and we only have AP or regular English 12 here. If I were to finish Spanish at a community college and transfer to a selective college would I still have a chance of being accepted?
If astronomy is required (a really odd requirement), drop either econ or gov and take Spanish.
You’d have to dual-enroll for Spanish. It’s perfectly fine to be dual enrolled (to take a community college class while enrolled in high school). You still apply as a freshman but get credits just like for Ap classes. However you MUST NOT take college classes after graduating high school, as at some universities it voids you admission to their programs although, more simply, in general, it simply makes you ineligible for freshmen status and its financial aid (ie., you’d lose money). So make sure that Spanish class is dual enrollment (also called concurrent enrollment, running start, PSEO…)
What if we only have normal Spanish at our high school?
Do you have access to any free, accredited, online high school providers that offer Spanish III?
