Help! Do schools only look at your best INDIVIDUAL SAT Scores?

Sorry, Newb here! (Probably posted in the wrong forum before...) And I may have a huge problem on my hand:

I took the SAT for the first time in October and did mediocre: 620/550/590. Not bad, yet this month I just got back my scores and they suddenly read 480/640/520. So much for that predicted standard deviation, eh?

Anyway, my question is this: I hear from some that schools will take all scores and only look at the best individual scores (Best math scores, reading scores, etc). Is this true for the majority of colleges? Or am I screwed because of that 480!?

True for most colleges except UCs.
