I have been accepted into engg programs in both.
penn state- engg undecided
hkust- mech engg
Vtech awaiting reply
I am really confused about which is better.

did you visit? did you ask how hard it is to graduate in 4 years in your major? look at the dorms? eat in the cafeteria?
congrats on your acceptances…i think you will do well in any of these schools but which one do you feel best about?

Hmmm… not sure
My mother visited HKUST. Well she is in love with it. But she hasnt really visited too many modern unis, so can trust her judgement. Food is fine in all i guess cause i am not too choosy regarding it. I suppose it will come down to the subjects, but i want someone to give me information that will help me rule out a uni on tht list.
thanx!

How much will each one cost you? I know HKUST is fairly cheap and probably compared to either Penn State or VTech IS, but my guess would be that Penn State or VTech OOS would cost more although you will want to get a definite answer on this. Another thing to consider is where do you want to work after you graduate. HKUST’s reputation is probably much better in Asia than the other schools but it is practically unknown in the US. Additionally, I would guess HKUST’s engineering programs aren’t ABET accredited which could potentially cause problems finding work in the US. It also depends on whether you want to live in Hong Kong or not. I think the three schools are roughly comparable in terms of quality so the above factors will probably be more important.

nachiappan,

Are you an international applicant for Penn State and VTech? If so, would either of those help you get a job in your home country after graduation? Remember, there is absolutely no guarantee that a US degree will mean that you can find permanent work here. You need to be prepared for employment outside the US.

Depends on which country you are a citizen of and where you want to work after graduation. Keep in mind that it’s not easy to get a job in a country you are not a citizen of. The HKUST campus is very different from that of VTech and Penn State. It’s by the sea and more modernized. Most students are from Hong Kong so they live with their parents at home and very few live on campus.

Thanks for replying guys!
i jus got into Vtech. I really dont want to go to HK, prefer US. I read ol that PSU has a higher placement rate(3rd in the country), is that true?
I am really divided between PSU and VT.

Are you an international applicant? If you are, you need to find out about Penn State’s permanent job placement rate for international students. That is what matters.

My daughter is a freshman engineering student at VT. Nearly all of her classmates had to chose between PSU and VT - the schools draw from very similar pool of applicants.

She chose VT over PSU b/c
- VT was cheaper. We were OOS for both.
- For civil engineering, VT was ranked higher - PSUs civil program was lackluster and wasn’t competitive to get into. VT’s is highly selective. (In both program you don’t get to pick your engineering major until 2nd year and only the best students get their pick of programs. At PSU, civil was everyone’s fallback whereas at VT, getting a guarantee for civil required a 3.4 after first semester 1st year, not sure about after that).
- Women in engineering support was better - easier access to mentoring, academic advisor, academic support
- Campus appealed to her more
- Job fairs just for engineering at VT - at PSU we only heard about job fairs for the entire school. There may be engineering job fairs at PSU but we didn’t hear them discussed.
- VT felt more comfortable to her.

Good luck with your choice. Both schools are terrefic.

I made a similar list of pros and cons. I want Industrial Engineering; i got undecided at PSU and VT- doesn’t say.
I want to work in US only for 2 years because i want to do my MBA there and it requires 2 years work experience. considering the fact that both are ranked number 4 for Industrial, i wanted to choose the one with a better job placement.
I did some research about the two universities and their level of standing in the minds of companies here. It appears VT is much more famous; odd since PSU is 140 years old. I am rather decent at science fairs and projects, not 100% into studies type of person. Thus, I also wanted to understand how the engineering projects and stuff are. Do you have any idea about it?
thanks for helping me once again!
