I know that scoring well in the writing MC section doesn't guarantee good essay scores, but I honestly don't know how I could have gotten a 6 on the essay. Just how subjective is this thing? I mean, I don't think that my essay was a perfect 12, but I'd like to believe that it was at least a 9 or 10. Did anyone else have similar results, and does anyone have an explanation for this? Is there a way that I can get my essay rescored?

Yes I got an 8 on my essay, and I also got that in seventh grade! The essay is dumb!

I got a 12. Two full pages, an introduction, two body paragraphs clearly outlining your point of view, and a conclusion. People make it harder than it is.

Make sure you outline first before anything. It’s better to spend 5 minutes on pre-writing than to dive into it right away and lose your train of thought midway.

I always set aside 5 minutes for a quick outline. A comprehensive thesis, 2 solid examples, 4 body paragraphs.

That’s the thing, though. I wrote (what I thought was) a well thought out, one-and-a-half-page paper with good vocabulary and sentence structure. Obviously, it wasn’t as well-written as other essays which I have composed when I had more time and resources, but it wasn’t an abysmal effort by any means. I know that everyone wants to say that they were the exception when it comes to test scores, but what if I really did just get bad graders? Is there any way to get it re-graded? Also, how much do colleges actually consider the essay or even the writing section in general?

^you sure you aren’t off topic?

One and a half pages will not yield anything over a 9, unfortunately. Length plays a huge role in your score.

Read the “12 essay in 10 days” thread, and use that formula, but I don’t think you need as many examples as he recommends.

I hate the length thing. I got a 9 this time (one-point improvement FTW!). However, I think the only reason I got a 9 as opposed to a 12 (I wrote a very good essay) was because of the length.

What sucks, though, is that I have midget handwriting. Like seriously, my chemistry teacher once told me I’m magic, because I can write so small that you would need a magnifying glass yet I still make it legible without one.

As a result, I write 1.5 pages rather than the 2 full pages I need, yet I still have probably twice the content as anyone else.

They should take handwriting into account for length.

/rant.

P.S. No I can’t write larger, I’ve tried and failed many times.

@NewAccount That’s not necessarily true. I got 10 with only one page and 8-9 lines on the second page.

@fallenangel, there’s no such thing as cant. but if you dont want to write larger then you must write more.

and yeah, i got a 12 this time and 11 last time and its all about length. The essay doesn’t have to be well written with great diction and sentence structure or some other crap guys, you just have to write as much as physically possible in 25 minutes on two pages (fill up both completely of course) with a decent argument and thats it.

@mathematicism, yeah its possible to do well w/o filling up as much as possible but for the most part its true that length will get you a better score.

No what I mean by “can’t” is that when I try, each line looks like a stairway. I start off writing large, but by the end of the line it’s miniscule again.

Sure I could pay even more attention to writing largely, but that would slow me down, causing me to lose my thoughts/focus and spend more time making sure the words are large enough. This would be counter-productive, as I would ultimately write less than when I write normally anyway.

I also have tiny, miniscule handwriting and managed to entirely fill the two pages.

I can’t manage that with only twenty minutes to do the actual writing. I don’t write quickly enough.

Haha, well that could be the problem. I write in cursive, so I write pretty quickly.

Length… You can expect at least a 8 if you complete all the two pages… Make your handwriter larger

heyy! i got 11 essay, but 55 on multiple choice! let’s exchange ideas!
