Help! I need some advice. My daughter is in a relationship with her professor!

^No response from the OP?

Nope. No word.

I think the power differential is very problematic, and I would be sitting shiva if my 19 year old daughter were dating any 34 year old<—that is a much larger developmental difference than that of a 50 and 65 year old. Heck, I’m 47 and don’t want to be dating a 62 year old.

The 61 year old President of the U Washington just married a 38 year old woman. When he was 34 she was 11.

^^^ ick, someone as some father-daughter issues.

post 444:

When she is 58 (about my age) he will be 81, older than my mother. I hope he is in extraordinary health, or there goes those golden late middle age years of carefree travel and childless fun.

^^That is too big of an age difference, kinda disgusting!

It’s also very sad (and unnecessary) when a young child loses an elderly father, should a younger woman and an older man have a child/children.

Story with photo

[Local News | Incoming UW President Michael Young gets married | Seattle Times Newspaper](http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/localnews/2015258529_uwpresident08m.html)

can anyone say gold digger?

Nothing to add except: Ewwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww.

Senator Dan Inouye recently married a woman decades younger than himself as well after his wife of many decades passed away. At least they are both old enough to make their own choices and he is not in a position of authority over her.

Two things:

Check the college’s policy on employee / student relationships (at my child’s college, it is against the rules and grounds for dismissal).

Beyond talking with your daughter about this and being frank about the typical (and boring) older professor guy/ younger co-ed relationships (which have been going on since the beginning of time), there isn’t much you can do expect be there for her when it all comes apart.

I don’t know; maybe you should ask to meet him - if he’s dating your daughter why not? Surely he isn’t ashamed, right?

I’m really sorry you are having to deal with this. Good luck.

Wow, HImom, does Hawaii now have the two oldest senators?
More shocking to people than the age difference may be the fact that Senator Inouye’s wife is not from Hawaii!
Anyway, that was a digression on my part. I would love to hear from the OP!

Yes, I believe HI does have that distinction, tho Senator Akaka has recently announced he will NOT seek re-election, so there will be a huge contest to see who gets his seat. HI’s rep, Mazie Hirono, has thrown her hat into the ring, so many are seeking her seat as well. Generally, our state just keeps re-electing its congressional folks until they stop running or die in office.

Sorry for the digression–returning this thread to its original track–waiting to hear from OP about status update.

OK, one more digression–a friend married a widower who is decades older than her. For 30-40+ years, they were an adorable, active couple. Just recently, as the H has reached his 90s, he’s GREATLY slowed down & she’s become his caretaker more than his wife. This is when I met her & him. I have been told by everyone who has known them over their marriage that they were so in love and just adored one another. Their marriage has already outlasted many an they are still happier than many, so who’s to say what will or will not work.

OK, back to OP, wherever she is.

I sent the OP a message- no answer at all yet.

Just heard the very young about-to-be-new wife of Hugh Hefner jsut backed out of the wedding. Good for her.

I have a serious problem with a young woman dating her professor (and vice versa) - other than that the age difference is their own personal business. If this were my daughter, I would be doing some serious intervening.

I would not be happy if my 19 yr old dated anyone in their 30’s but when I was 23 I married a 37 year old. The marriage lasted over 2 decades. I am now dating a younger man only 12 years my senior. I don’t have any daddy issues and am not a gold digger.

Certainly there does not need to be a large difference in age for a spouse to be more of a caretake than a spouse — this happned to my parents and they were only a year apart.

I have been following this post and have wondered what has happened since the dgt is home for the summer. I wish the OP would let us all know. Although this theme did run like several episodes of the Gilmore Girls.
