So I'm a junior that haven't taken any SAT yet and I'm currently trying to cram the ACT and the SAT in June. I was wondering if I should take the subject tests in June (I'm already taking AP bio, APUSH,and math) and study during the summer for SAT or just take the SAT in June with only one month to prepare? My psat score is really low 160 but I'm pretty strong in Bio,USH and math. Any suggestions to my situation? Also what's the latest SAT/ACT score college will accept? Thanks in advance!!!

You don’t need the sat AND the act. Take the one you are going to do best on. Study like crazy for ONE of those tests. Once you know what test you are going to take then pick your subject tests. But your sat or act score is going to be more important than your subject tests in the admission process.

With ACT and SAT2, you will cover standardized test requirements for all schools. You may take SAT1 later or retake ACT. June should be the best time to take SAT2 on the subjects you just finished AP exams. For ED/EA, October test is fine. Some would even accept November scores. For RD, you will have a few more chances. Nevertheless, you are a bit behind in test preparation. You should have at least one test score for ACT or SAT1 on hand by now.

@desie1 - I couldn’t agree more!
@blueturtle09 - I really think you are putting the cart before the horse. Check with the colleges you are thinking of applying to, but usually only the really selective schools require the SAT 2. You really can’t afford to worry about the SAT 2 now because you cannot be doing the things you need to do to get into a top university when you have an SAT score that could keep you out of a decent university (I say this assuming you don’t have anything out of this world) on your application that makes up for it).

You also, as desie1 said, don’t need to take both the SAT and the ACT. Take a full-length, timed practice test (after having familiarized with the basics of both exams). You really need to prioritize. You need to take a mock exam today for the SAT and another for the ACT the next day. You must do this today, the registration deadlines are days away:

As to your questions about what scores a college will accept, what colleges are you looking at (don’t even think about this one until you’ve first registered for the SAT and the ACT)?

Subject tests because you’ll already be studying for finals.

flickgirl13 has a point but if you don’t take the sat’s this year, you’ll have to ace your 1 chance in october. I mean you may think you did well but you might not have. Maybe you can take the november one too but it’d be a hassle in my opinion, not to mention college applications that have to be sent out. Take your sats in june.

Normally I would agree, but if someone has a 160 on the PSAT (equivalent to a 1600 out of 2400 on the SAT) to wait until their senior year to take his first SAT, that person is gambling with his/her ability to get into a decent college? Should they do so in order to pick the most opportune moment to take the SAT 2, a test he would only need for the more selective colleges? That’s like suggesting someone builds a house without a foundation.

No one should ever wait until their senior year to start taking the SAT (or the ACT). This is even more true if someone has a low PSAT score. Please register for the regular SAT or ACT right away and start studying like mad. You’re obviously willing and able to do higher-level work, so it sounds like you want to get into a good school. Don’t let yourself get a low SAT score when you do not have to.

blueturtle09 - what did you end up deciding?
