Help me choose

I have basically narrowed down application essay ideas to two. With ED deadlines fast-approaching, I can’t help but feel that I’m extremely behind and need to start my essays very soon.

My two essay ideas:

My mother’s death. She died the summer before I started high school. It has affected me significantly. That said, I think I may be coming off as trying to get sympathy and/or depressed, neither of which is the case. I’ll probably use this for any essay that asks about a difficult problem or significant setback, but for a standard essay, I’m really not sure…opinions?

I am a certified SCUBA diver, and I am considering writing my essay about the work I went through to become certified or one of the dives I’ve been on. I think this shows a unique side of me that colleges might be interested in. I also feel it is a lot lighter than my other essay choice.

Any advice or information will be greatly appreciated. Thanks for helping

(2) would be what I would choose.

But, if you feel you can do your first option justice, then you could do that too.

Just a thought.

2) it's unique. no offense but the death essay seems cliched.

both sound good. the scuba one is interesting. a girl wrote about her laugh and got into columbia. so it doesn't necessaraly have to create sympathy.

Ok, thanks...yeah I was sort of leaning toward number 2 also...thanks for the input!

i would definitely go with number 2
