help me decide what college to go to!

hey everyone! I've had a hard time narrowing down my colleges...I've even made pros and cons lists but I'm still having a hard time deciding.
so here are the colleges:

Fordham Rosehill ($5000)
Elon (Presidential Scholarship $4000)
Penn State
UMD college park(Freshman Connection Program), IS tuition
Syracuse ($5000)

possible communications or marketing major, I don't want a campus where everyone is a part of Greek life

cmon people! ;)

How much will each school cost? What can your family afford?

Sorry tralala2 - your question is too wide open. The schools your looking at are wildly different - What do you what from your college experience? Intimate connections with students / profs. A big enough school or a school you can get lost in? Communications or marketing major is the Vanilla or Chocolate of many schools. Elon is perhaps the most Greek on your list but even at Elon most students don’t choose to do the Greek thing. So time to tell us more of what you hope to get out of your 4 years… PS: Great choices…

True! That’s my problem…these schools are different, and that’s why I’m having trouble deciding.

I like big schools and I like diversity. Right now the two I’m leaning towards are Syracuse and UMD. I also would like to have a school that is not in the middle of nowhere…I like to be somewhat close to a city.

UMD - its the cheapest because of in state and is a great school for the $$$ but the problem is that for the first semester I wouldn’t be able to get a dorm. I know its only one semester but I reallyyy would hate living at home, missing the college experience, commuting everyday…However, I do like that it is close to DC.

Syracuse - Love their communications school! And I love the size of this school…medium sized. I got into CAS so if I went here I would have to transfer…I’m a hard worker so I think I could do it. Does anyone know how hard it is to transfer into Newhouse? Despite getting $5000 this is the most expensive school. Would have to take loan out.

Fordham - Rosehill is a small school but I really love the proximity to NYC. Many internship opportunities, and I’ve always wanted to live in NY. Does anyone know what kind of reputation Fordham has?

Elon - Definitley affordable, but I am not comfortable with a little school in the middle of nowhere. I haven’t visited yet, but I get the impression that its cliquey and somewhat resembles hs. Although I have heard that they have a good communications program.

Penn State - Affordable. I really like the support they have for the undecided. Since I am dwindling between marketing and communications, Penn State would allow me to take classes in both schools (their business and comm school)

UMD and get on the waiting list for housing.

Lots of students commute there for a semester or more. All of the ones that I have known who wanted to live on campus found housing in a reasonable time. Would things be different if you started this summer or in the spring?

I’m on the waitlist for housing, and I looked into summer classes but I hear that they still don’t guarantee dorms for the whole year. Parents forcing me to start school in fall.

I can’t help with your college selection but don’t worry about Fordham’s reputation. It’s reputable and said to be academically good/great.

Sounds like this should be UMD vs. Penn State for you.

I would not borrow to go to Syracuse given your less expensive options, especially since you are not guaranteed to get the major you want.

I know you’re not crazy about Greek life, but if you end up at UMD and commuting your first semester, I think it would make a lot of sense to just sample rush and see how you like it. UMD has deferred recruitment, so if you joined in January, you’d be part of a freshman class that was all new to the organization, like you. This would be a quick way to get into the swing of things as an on-campus student. If you don’t like the people you meet at rush, then don’t join – simple as that.

I Wouk say Penn state… Syrcause isn’t worth the borrowing I don’t think although there comm school is really good… I’m not a fan of the freshman connection thing… I had a friend who did it and dreaded the commute an such she said she felt really disassociated with the rest of the freshman class… She said she wishes she chose another school where she could have gotten into the swing of things from day one and like you said… Penn state has wonderful resources for the undecided
