Help me out of a dilemma- LSA or COE??

Let me preface this by saying one thing--- No matter what, I want to go to UofM, it's my dream school, and let's just say that I'd be really really disappointed w/ a rejection.

I'm very interested in engineering, however I haven't completely committed to it as a future major, which means I'd definitely find a major like Comp Sci in LSA amazing.

People tell me that engineering applicants are self selective and it's way harder to get into than LSA, which is why I'm worried about applying there as a borderline applicant, however my schedule seems to be skewed towards the math and science courses COE favors.

This will equate to a 3.75 by the time I graduate, obviously with a huge upwards trend.

SAT: 730cr, 800m, 760w

Please sift through all of this information and help me decide where to apply! I'd really appreciate it, as I honestly have no idea what to do right now.

Also-- if i'm missing anything important please let me know!

Btw- forgot to mention, I’m instate.

You’ll probably get into either. If you think you’d rather do Engineering apply there, if you think you’d rather do LSA apply there.

Your 800 M score plus the As in AP Calc and Programming certainly would make you suitable to COE. I’m not even sure that they’ll look that seriously at your gr 8 and 9 grades. So I agree you should be in good shape either way you go.

See if you can job shadow an engineer and a programmer. See if someone will grant you an “informational” interview.
What kinds of things do you enjoy doing in your spare time? Eg. do you get a kick out of programming things when there’s nothing else to do? Do you geek out constructing things? Try to fit your application choice to the things you find yourself making extra time to do.

And since you’re in-state, you have a golden opportunity to go and sit in on classes. Do it! You’ll get a feel for where you most closely fit!

At any rate, I like your chances.

If you’re still in eleventh grade it is too early to assess chances other than to say U-M is not a safety nor a major reach. Based on your post it appears you should apply to COE. You seem to have an interest there and if you change your mind the internal transfer to LSA is mostly administrative. The reverse transfer is also doable but because of COE prereqs is more difficult.

So you feel like I wouldn’t be at a disadvantage applying to the CoE?
