Help me out USC vs. NYU

Well, I just got into the Tisch film program off of the waitlist and they said they need an answer in the next day or two. I was going to go to USC and study creative writing (ya not their strongest area) but now I gotta decide. The only reason this is even a question is b/c I am interested in creative writing and I kinda liked the thought of taking some film classes without being in the major and getting to take writing courses and then have the option of deciding to transfer into the film program junior year or continue writing. But at the same time, turning down Tisch film for USC creative writing is hard. I do however like the general USC school more than NYU (weather, campus, sports, ect.) Any thoughts would be appreciated.

USC creative writing isn't their strongest area but you can take film and screenwriting courses (they have an incredible screenwriting minor) and if you did that combination of courses it would be a great program. I'm thinking of doing that if I get into USC (i'm a transfer and transfers cant apply to the screenwriting major so I put creative writing and I want to minor in screenwriting or possibly transfer to film as a junior- if I get in i'll be a sophomore so i'll have a year to take classes and apply to film if I want to or just stick with creative writing) I also applied to NYU as a transfer but I haven't heard back yet. I will pick USC over NYU though if I get into both just because I absolutely loved USC when I visited and the weather is better than New York. Plus, LA is really where the film industry is so if you are at all interested in film I'd go there. You don't have to major in film to work in the film industry and you can make greast connections at USC just by taking film classes and joining the student film organizations and getting internships in LA. But, congrats on tisch, that's amazing! You have to make the best choice for you and either way you'll be going to an awesome school. Good luck with your choice! Post when you decide!

That's a very tough decision. You're really going to have to think about whether film is THE major or not. Trying to transfer into film junior year at USC is risky, it's definitely not a sure thing. NYU is great in terms of film, just as much as USC (and Hollywood-wise, you don't have to be there to make great connections and really get involved.) USC film and NYU film aren't the same, but they aren't all that different either. If you really want to do film, I would definitely say go to NYU. Tisch has a great program and from my experience (my brother's roomate there is in the program) it will teach you everything you ever wanted to know. Also, NYU is in NYC. It has lots of things to do, and is a really exciting place as well. Just because you are on the east coast does not mean you won't make connections (my brother's other roomate, in acting, is the son of the director of many Bill Murray movies such as Quick Change and others) so you won't be left out. This is a fantastic opportunity, and it would be very difficult to decide. A sure thing Tisch, or a possible USC? (film-wise.) Good luck, but it's really up to whether you know you want to do film right now or not (NYU also has a great creative writing and theatrical/cinema arts majors as well, so if you switch out of film you're garaunteed a great education.)

i had kind of the same problem, but a lot of it came down to the overall college experience i wanted:

sports, campus, people, LA, weather

vs.

clubbing, city, people, culture, fast pace

good luck!!!

choices...and most importantly...fit

Honestly I would go with Tisch. You have the opportunity to attend one of the best film schools in the nation. Think of it this way, you can always go back to school later in life to study creative writing (grad admission is not tough at all), but you likely won't ever get the chance to enroll in a program like Tisch.

Or if you do well in Tisch, you may be able to transfer to USC later or go there for grad school. USC's great, but not worth giving up the major you really want.

usc for sure...
all nyu about is nyc

Both schools are indisputably top of the line. We should all have the problem of such a choice. But, if you were raised in Atlanta, you will probably like the feel of USC better (social life, big time athletics, gorgeous honeys, ground zero of the film industry, etc.) and you will sure as hell prefer the weather. I would take USC in a heart beat.

im having the same problem! only mine is for their journalism schools… ranking wise USC is better but location wise i REALLY wanna go to nyc. advice?

btw this:
“sports, campus, people, LA, weather vs. clubbing, city, people, culture, fast pace”
just makes the decision harder!
