Hey guys
Currently, I am having hard time deciding my school for my accounting degree(looking to apply next year as a transfer student)
University of Missouri - Columbia, Truslake college of Business, School of Accountancy
University of Minnesota - Twin cities, Carlson school of Management, Accounting.
According to Public Accounting Report, Mizzou has like top 15 accounting program in the nation. However, the school as a whole, even business school, seems not that famous or prestigious, However, it seems like UMN’s business school is well-known and structured(Like top 20~25 business school in the nation), but I really do not hear about their accounting program before.
I wanna be an accountant hoping to work in Chicago near future. Considering reputation and internship opportunities, I wonder which school is better for me. Please help me out.
Does accounting program at Mizzou really well-know across the nation? does people working in accounting field know about it?
To much thoughts,I cannot make a right decision, Please advise me!
Carlson took in fewer than 70 transfers last fall. How many did Mizzou take in? Carlson might be significantly more difficult to get into as a transfer.
Either school would be good - two items that would may have Mizzou over UMN
- More Mizzou grads (vs. UMN grads) over the last decade or so come from the Chicago area - so networking may be easier as a Mizzou grad.
- In most cases, after a year at Mizzou, you are eligible for in-state tuition.
Apply to both. You really need to apply to 3-4 Universities to hedge your bets.
I have like 3.9 GPA with decent ECs and Internship works and I am pretty sure I will be a good competitor. So the major matter for me is not about how hard I get in,I think what is good for my future and career.
Umn has a stronger reputation for almost everything except journalism.
But applying to 3-4 Universities really is minimal so apply to both, then find two others of your choice (Truman state or MUST ROLLA /umn Duluth or Morris depending on what’s in state for you? Iowa state? Nebraska? U Wisconsin? )
The reason why I am applying to only two colleges because of financial problems. I can get really good decent scholarships from both schools as an international student…So what you are saying UMN as a whole is better than Mizzou in terms of reputation. Just in case of accounting, do you still think that I should go for UMN otherwise I am studying Journalism?
I am living in Missouri now by the way.
UMN has great business connections and pretty much all their kids graduate with jobs. The large majority are going to be in the Twin Cities area just due to the large number of Fortune 500 companies here. Chicago, of course, will have a larger Fortune 500 presence and will have many accounting service providers, some of whom are going to be Chicago-based. There will be Carlson kids looking in the Chicago area but their search may be more self-directed (they’ll get some help from career placement as well but they may not see as many Chicago firms as Twin Cities firms on campus).
You should look into what the career placement rate is for Mizzou. That’s going to be at least as important as their rank in accounting.
If you live in Missouri, will you be considered instate for tuition and state grants?
If your family is lower income or has financial difficulties, ask for a fee waiver.
Some Universities are free to apply. Drake or Beloit, for instance. You can search in common app by clicking “no fee” as a criterion.
