I'm in my second year of community college and I'm looking to transfer for fall 2012. The schools I am applying to require a calculus course to be taken. However, at this point the earliest I can take a calculus would be over the summer of 2012, unless I take Pre calculus over the winter and calculus next spring. I was looking to get some opinions on this situation.

Ultimately, the question I have is whether it would be a waste of time (and money) to apply to those colleges just to get denied due to the fact I have yet to take a calculus course.

One option would be to go to umass Amherst. However, I'm not really interested living on campus which is what I would be forced to do. I realize there are other state schools available but I'm not interested. Umass Amherst is my "if all else fails" option.

Another option would be to return to my community college for fall 2012 and take the calculus course. I would also make up 2-3 classes I didn't do so well in if that would be a good idea.

And my last option would be to go ahead and apply to the schools in hope of being accepted anyways. If someone thinks there is a chance, of course.

Thanks for any replies.

I could really use some advice even if it’s just saying that the schools are unlikely to accept me.

You could try studying with a private tutor and taking a college board CLEP test (College Level Examination Program). I took one for English because the school I am applying to doesn’t accept the AP credit that my former school did. The tests are administered all over the country and you probably have a test center close to you. There is a $15 registration fee and a $77 test fee. Check with the schools because most of them accept these tests as college credit.

I would definitely wait until you will be finished with calculus one when you applied. I don’t think you have a good chance of getting in without the prerequisites done.

Thank you for the responses. I will look into taking one of those tests. Regarding taking the class: do you think that I should stay at my community college next fall and apply for spring 2013?

Yes. The more college credits + prerequisites you have, the better your chances.

Thank you. I know I’m extending the topic a bit more than necessary, but do you think I should retake courses that I didn’t do so well in? For example I took two summer courses and received a C and B- which I’m not too proud of. I would take those courses again and I know I could definitely improve the grades.

You can also let admissions counselors know that you will be taking calc over the summer. They may accept you contingent upon taking and passing the course. If you’d fail to take it, or fail the course, they can revoke their offer if they’d like.

Thank you that helps a lot.
