Help! How should I proceed with this situation???

I called the Wake Forest Office of Merit-Based Scholarships yesterday to ask about why I hadn't recieved anything about whether or not I recieved a scholarship. They said that I never recieved anything because my application was never complete. My file only contained my high school transcript and teacher recommendation, but the portion of the application that I had to fill out, and the personal recommendation were not there. I called my field hockey coach who filled out the personal reccomendation, and she knows that she sent it back in December, and I know that I did the same with my portion of the application.

I called today again, and the woman checked my admission folder to see if the two items had been misplaced there, and there was nothing. I have no record of whether or not I sent it, so it comes down to my word vs theirs (putting both of us in a difficult spot). They said that I should have called when I didn't recieve anything saying that my application for scholarships was complete, but it honestly didn't occur to me because I was recieving things from admissions. I did call once back in January just to check in with the scholarship office, but there was no answer, and I never thought to try to call again.

By now, even if they found the other two documents, all scholarships have been given out, so I couldn't recieve anything. My thought is that the two documents are probably together somewhere at Wake Forest, filed together in the wrong place. I think that the chances of finding them are very slim, but I'm wondering what I can do to get a chance at getting scholarships? Do you think that they would agree to letting me be considered for freshman scholarships as a sophomore, given the situation? Is it totally helpless?

I don't want to bother them too much, because there is no way to prove who's fault it truely is that they aren't on file. My mom also talked to the lady on the phone today. The lady was very nice, but basically said that there was nothing she could do if my file was not complete. In 20/20 hindsight, I should have called before now, but I didn't know that I needed to. What would be the best way for me to approach this situation? Money will not be a determining factor in my college decision, but I would like to be considered for the scholarships that I applied for! Help!

(note: I didn't not apply for those big full-ride scholarships, just the general merit-based ones)

Yeah, I believe I received a notification that they received my scholarship application. You are just in a bad position because scholarships should be going out soon and either are decided or will be decided very shortly. There really is nothing you can do, and I do feel for you because that scholarship application was a beast. I highly doubt that they would consider allowing you to be considered for freshman scholarships as a sophomore, but there are some scholarships you can apply for while at Wake i think. Furthermore you can apply for just general scholarships. Wake is pretty stingy with merit-aid anyway (if that makes you feel any better). You could follow up with another phone call or maybe they will find it. Other than that I wouldn't worry about it because it is out of your hands now.

First of all I'm really sorry to hear about your situation. However, I can tell you that unless things have changed (I graduated from Wake in 2004), there are scholarships available for you to apply for as an upperclassman, including the Carswell scholarship. I'm not sure if they bring in a ton of money, but it's an option. Also, to the poster who said Wake is stingy with merit-aid, compare Wake with some of the comparable schools across the country, they really do try to give both need-based and merit-based forms of aid. Look at the website, there are a lot more named scholarships than at Duke and quite a few other schools. Furthermore, they don't just have scholarships for the top 1% of applicants, I think they do a better job of spreading the money around than a lot of schools. In my case I got a merit scholarship but it still wasn't enough for me to attend, and the great people in the scholarships office worked with me and ended up finding me another $8000 so I was able to attend. It may not be too late to talk to someone and see if they can help you.

Hm. Thanks for the input. There is no way I'll get need-based scholarships because we never filed a FAFSA (it would have been a lost cause.) I'm also not a NC resident, baptist, insert other qualifications for many of the merit based scholarships. There were only a few that I was elidgible for, and I didn't apply for the Reynolds or Carswell scholarships because I knew that the chances of me getting them were extremely slim, and I was too busy at the time doing other applications. I just wish that I could have been considered for the ones that I did apply for, and had a shot at getting- even if I didn't end up getting them!

So basically, the concensus is that there is nothing that I can do now, except maybe apply for other scholarships once I am at Wake? That is no fun. If anyone has any ideas please let me know. Like I said, money will not be a deciding issue in my college decision. BC and Wake (my top 2) are going to cost roughly the same. This is frustrating.
