I am vacationing in the West Coast right now, but when I submitted my common app, the times displayed are on January 2nd!! How do I let the admissions offices of the colleges I applied to know that I submitted well before the deadline???
Relax, they get the time zone it was submitted from. You are just getting the time zone it was received in. You are fine.
@CADREAMIN not true because rice university said jan. 2nd too it would have been 11:04 not 12:04
Nothing you can do. If the deadline was 11:59 eastern time, that’s what it was.
I don’t think schools will have a strict cut off this year as 1/1 is a Sunday, and the holiday is 1/2, and the next business day is 1/3.
However, learn from this. Don’t submit everything at the last minute.
As stated above it is where you submitted from. The answer has been given several times, correctly. All timestamps are recorded in EST. And if you looked at the common app they spelled it all out for you. Did you not see the GIANT highlighted box when you logged into common app??? (Can’t miss it.) This was in big letters -
The January 1 deadline is on January 1 at 11:59 pm in your local time,
but you don’t need to wait until then.

When is the deadline for my application submission?
To meet an application deadline, you must submit your application materials by 11:59 pm on the deadline date posted on your Dashboard.
The end of the deadline date is in your local time zone, not the college’s time zone. Keep in mind, all timestamps are recorded in EST (US Eastern Standard Time).
It is always better to submit well before 11:59 pm to avoid last minute issues with your computer or internet access that might cause you to miss the deadline!
Example 1
You live in New York and have an application with a deadline of January 1. You have until 11:59 pm Eastern Standard Time on January 1 to submit your application.
Example 2
You live in California and have an application with a deadline of January 1. You have until 11:59 pm Pacific Standard Time on January 1 to submit your application.
Example 3
You live in Shanghai and have an application with a deadline of January 2. You have until 11:59 pm China Standard Time on January 2 to submit your application.
As always, it is best to be familiar with college-specific deadline dates, which can be found in several places:
“My application was rejected solely because I sent it in one hour late” said nobody… ever.
There’s not code written in the school servers that auto deletes your app. You’ll be fine.
