Help tbb make final decision!

Hey guys. All my decisions are in so it's time to finally decide. I have about two weeks to do so.

I've narrowed it down to two schools: ASU Barrett Honors College and Georgetown University. I plan to be on a pre-medical track. I'm an hour from Georgetown and across the country for ASU.

At ASU, I'd be an Economics major and I received $13k /yr in merit. I'm not 100% decided on an Econ major, but it interests me.

At Georgetown, I'd be in the school of Nursing and Health Sciences. I'd be a Healthcare Management and Policy major, it looks like a great program - claimed to go well with pre-med.

Costs: ASU is obviously a lot cheaper but if I wanted to go to Georgetown, I could with no loans. For Georgetown I have a family employee discount, so figure a total cost in the 160k-180k range.

I have some pros and cons of both in my head and I'm wondering what you guys think.

Georgetown. The Healthcare Management and Policy major seems to be more efficient with what you might want to pursue (pre-med). Plus, it’s twice the college ASU will ever be (but that’s my opinion).

Wondering about pre-med experience at a very competitive school vs comparatively easy school. I’m average at 'Town and ~top 7% at ASU. Any experience on how this dynamic plays out? Are the classes a lot harder at the top school, do the small class sizes make up for it?

Barrett has a lot going for it as well. I wouldn’t generalize ASU as a whole if you haven’t looked up Barrett.

strong major to username ratio

i’d tell you to go with georgetown. You won’t enjoy a major you don’t like.

I don’t want this to turn into a major vs major thread. I like both majors equally, as much as a high school senior can. What I mean by not 100% sure is that I need to see how it will fare with all of the pre-requisites. I just want to study something versatile and interesting that can get all the pre-reqs in. ASU has more freedom as I can pick a major from any school.

ASU economics is top 20 in the world. Nobel laureate in econ teaches a freshman class. It’s a good program. Georgetown’s program is also very strong and unique.

http://grad-schools.usnews.rankingsandreviews.com/best-graduate-schools/top-humanities-schools/economics-rankings

Idk where you get that stat from but it’s ranked #36 here. Regardless you don’t want to do Economics for Medical School. You are much better of doing an easier Major, in the school for Humanities for instance, and simply take the pre-med classes.

http://www.shanghairanking.com/SubjectEcoBus2012.html

Humanities won’t get me a job if I don’t get into medical school. I want to try Econ. It’s in the business school, so I’ll be able to take general finance and accounting classes.

Is your ultimate goal to get into med school and become a doctor? If yes, you’d probably be a top dog at ASU and you’d probably be able to get in easier. If you went to Georgetown, you’d face more competition.

If not, Georgetown’s better because you’ll have more opportunities.

Also, if social life is a factor in your decision, Georgetown is work hard/play hard, while ASU is just play hard.

Georgetown is the clear choice

Yes, ultimate goal is medical school. I’m realistic though and realize that over half who apply don’t get in.

That’s what I’m wondering about - does being a top dog at a lower school actually translate to a higher GPA and thus medical school acceptance?

Georgetown has a guaranteed admission program to their medical school. I’ll try to get some info on it.

Bump

Anyone else have input?

If your goal is medical school, from what I’ve heard you need a top GPA. Which school do you feel you could achieve that at? At Barrett, you have many options for majors if you want to change, and you will get all the benefits of smaller honors classes. My S is going to Barrett in the fall as well, and it is the big reason he chose ASU over some other higher ranked schools. It will be a wonderful experience for him. We just got back from orientation and he wanted to stay!

@JCCsMom

Those sentiments are exactly why I’ve decided on Barrett! It’s tough to turn down a school like Gtown, but I’m making the right decision - academically and financially.

Remember what tbb stands for, and go to Barrett. For we lucky ones, life is what you make of it. Make it good, young man. Good luck.

Good luck and don’t forget to write a thread in August/September, giving us news (and, more importantly, providing CC readers with a view from the other side: good/bad choice, regrets, +/-…) You can always go to Gtown for med school :D

Mini update: tbb talked to a GTown prof, points he made about GT:

•students who do the work will get As and Bs…very little in between, it’s either an A or a B or an F
•profs are world class, will help you
•students who do the work and graduate from the school of health go to medical school
•students who do the work, fill out the applications, will get GT early assurance
•unwritten rule that medical schools do look at the Georgetown name
•I have two great options and will succeed at either if I do the work. Go where comfortable.

Sounds like it all comes down to effort. Thought I’d share, still favoring Barrett. Like what I heard though.

One more thing: he also said econ would be a really good major for going to med school.

Any major is fine for medical school as long as you complete the specific course requirements.

I have decided to attend Georgetown University! Go Hoyas.
