I read on various blogs and posts online that suggests that UC’s like students to finish as many major prep classes as soon as possible, leaving 1-2 major required classes for the last spring semester before they transfer.
I started a CA community college in the fall of 2020, and after consulting multiple times with my counselor, we developed a plan that made it plausible for me to meet the IGETC and the recommended major prep class requirements within 1 year. However, this meant that for this spring semester, I am taking 6 classes all toward major preparation requirements. Could this negatively impact my chances when the admissions team is viewing my application?
I am on track to receive an associate degree for transfer in History by the end of this spring semester. I have also maintained a 4.0 GPA for 1 semester I have been at community college.
I contacted UCLA recently, and their exact reply is:
“Please note, to be eligible for admission, transfer applicants have until the Spring term prior to transfer to complete the major preparation requirements outlined on our website. Since we do not advise based on hypothetical scenarios, we strongly encourage students applying from other UC campuses or from California Community Colleges…”
I’m still so confused by their wording. From what I read on the general UC website, it sounds like I just have to finish all classes before I transfer. But from how UCLA, it sounds like I should have finished my classes by the end of fall semester/start of spring semester before I transfer? Am I overthinking this?
I’m open to any suggestions from anyone who has transferred within 1 yr to a UC/has a clearer understanding on the whole major class requirement for UC transfers.
At the same time, I also did apply to UCI, UC Berkley, and UCSD. Do you think I should reach out to their admissions team also on this question?
