Hello,
I am a student in my first semester at a California CC majoring in psychology that is considering looking to transfer to a university in Fall 2021. The reason why I’m able to consider this is that I took a ton of AP exams in high school, which I petitioned to have on my transcript, granting me a lot of credits and therefore allowing me to have most of my general education for IGETC done with. My plan for transfer is to hopefully get into the University of California system, with my top choices being UCLA and UCI. However, I’m not sure if I should transfer so soon or not because while I’ll have completed the coursework needed for an AA-T at my CC, finished IGETC, met the required general transfer admissions requirements for UC, and completed a majority of the requirements for the major by spring, I’ll be missing two social science courses since that’s a part of the psychology pathway. If I had room, I would try to fit them into my spring schedule, but I simply don’t have enough room for that. I did not take summer courses because truth be told, I didn’t realize that I would get that much credit from my APs and I wish I had taken advantage of them.
I was thinking about taking winter courses, but sadly my CC doesn’t have a winter session. Should I go take the social sciences courses at another CC that does have one? Would it be worth spending the money to take those courses? Or would it be better to wait another year prior to transfer? Would it be advisable to go to my CC’s counseling department about this and how would I approach them about it? I’m just really stuck on what to do and I feel like my chance at being able to transfer successfully within one year is gone.
