What do you say to an question that asks why Chicago fits you personally??

Well, why does it? U Chicago's got a lot of attractions that apply to different people. The city. The Common Core. The "life of the mind." The research opportunities. The small classes yet awesome education. The benefit of learning with other bright minds. The attractive campus. The varied, sometimes-obscure-but-always-great programs and classes. The weather (whoops, ignore that). The intense but satisfying work-study-play environment. The list goes on...What attracted you to Chicago?

the name. :D

This is one of those questions where you just have to be honest, and avoid writing "what you think they want to hear."

speaking of the name..."chicago" there's the college "name" or reputation...and then there is the name of the city..."chicago" ...do you know what it means? .....you could do a little research and write an essay on the name "chicago"....the university and the indian name for the region....could be a really fascinating and or humorous essay....

i have a question somewhat related about the app. do the teacher recs, additional recs, and counselor rec have to be sent separately from the app. or can they be sent with app. the app. says the teachers should mail, but do they have to. thanks for clarification.

Spiker: Since Chicago is reputed to be from the native American word Eschicagou, which is said to mean "smelly onions," it would be interesting to see where that essay would lead.

Browns: The typical practice is to supply stamped, pre-addressed envelopes to teachers.

Also, is it looked down upon to send more than lets say 5 or 6 recs? What if i submit 8 teacher recs? will that decrease my chances to get in?

Whoa! Don't you think 8 recs is a bit much? I only sent in the bare minimum for each college.

I think the Rhodes scholarship requires 8 recs, though. :p

Browns: unless each teacher has something new to add, I'd think it would greatly reduce your chances. The LAST thing you want to do is bore the adcom.

Browns: the numbers are a lot less important than the quality of the recommendations. As for whether they should be submitted with the application or sent separately, are you implying that if they're sent with the application you would see those letters? The reason the adcom wants the teachers to send them separately from your application (or perhaps for your school GC to send them as a package) is that the letters are supposed to be confidential. They are a lot more credible that way.

thanks. i have another question though. If i take the October 8th sat, will my scores reace UC in time for the nov. 1 deadline for ea. I really want to apply EA to UC but I don't know if my score report wil make it by the October 8th deadline. thanks

It typically takes two weeks for the score report to get sent out. Regardless, I believe the rule is "by the November test date," meaning that anything up to and including the November SAT gets included.

i think you meant NOV 1 deadline. but i always know that nov is always the last safe date to take the SAT, provided you designate that school as a recipient. however, i also know of schools who say that nov will not make it in time.

i have been trying to fill out the uncommonapp by first starting the basic information form but when i log in, it asks me to set a new password and i do, but when i press save and continue, it directs me back to the log in page. has anybody had the same problem.

You will probably have to wait a while for your password to be processed. I seem to remember getting an email about it, but don't hold me to that, It was a year ago and I had 5 other apps to fill out, nearly all online.
